We reported on Derek Carr's injury early Monday morning. The second-year starter went down late in the second quarter in the Oakland Raiders blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals with a hand injury. He didn't return to action.
While reports late Sunday night indicated that X-rays on Carr's hand injury came out negative, it now appears that the Raiders starter will miss the teams's Week 2 outing against the Baltimore Ravens.
"Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will have an MRI on his injured hand Monday, and the team doesn't expect him to play Sunday, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen."
With Carr injured on Sunday, Matt McGloin took over, throwing for two touchdowns and in interception in garbage time action against the Bengals. The third-year quarterback from Penn State will start next week against a stout Ravens front seven.
Not mincing any words, rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper indicated just how much this injury hurts the Raiders:
"It's a huge blow," Cooper said. "He's our starting quarterback and the leader of our offense. We need him. We'll see how it plays out."
According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Raiders reached out to the recently released Christian Ponder following Carr's injury. That could be an indication that the injury is more serious than Oakland wants to let on.
It's also important to note that Carr had trouble gripping the ball due to the swelling in his throwing hand.
While Carr is nowhere near a starter-caliber fantasy quarterback, he is rosterable in larger leagues. If you are relying on him as an early-season bye-week replacement, it might be time to hit the waiver wire. Though, McGloin is in no way a viable fantasy option, even as a short-term replacement.
