Washington Redskins Officially Release Robert Griffin III

In a long expected move, the Washington Redskins have officially released quarterback Robert Griffin III. This isn't necessarily shocking news given the fact that RGIII was a healthy inactive for the vast majority of Washington's game during a 2015 campaign that saw Kirk Cousins lead the team to a surprising division title.

RGIII quickly fell out of favor in Washington following internal issues with both the organization and teammates as well as injuries he had to deal with following a breakout performance as a rookie in 2012.

Despite the tailspin RGIII's career is seemingly in right now, there promises to be a ton of interest in his services. He's still an uber-talented quarterback that's going to be hitting what has to be considered an incredibly weak free-agent class at that position.

This comes on the heels of Washington signing Kirk Cousins to the franchise tender, guaranteeing that he will be back for the 2016 campaign.

Cousins had a stellar 2015 season, compiling 4,166 passing yards with 34 total touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a NFL-leading 69.8 completion percentage. From a fantasy perspective, Cousins finished this past season as eighth-best quarterback in the league.

For his part, RGIII released a statement on Instagram confirming the move:

"It was a blessing guys. After 4 years, my days as a part of this team have come to an end. I just want to take the time to say thank you #SkinsNation," RGIII wrote. "Thank you for welcoming my family with open arms in 2012. You guys made it truly an honor to play for you and I couldn't imagine starting my career anywhere else."

Among the teams expected to be interested in RGIII, the San Francisco 49ers could very well have a need at quarterback after Colin Kaepernick reportedly requested a trade last month. RGIII seems to be a perfect fit for Chip Kelly's system in the coach's first season as the 49ers head coach.
