Throughout the 2016 season, we've been doing a weekly article focusing on the top-15 fantasy tight ends and where they stand as it relates to target distribution. It's a rather simple stat. The tight ends are ranked according to the number of targets they receive in comparison to the number of passes thrown by their team in games they suit up in.
While overall target numbers are more than helpful as it relates to a fantasy tool, this takes it one step further. Simply put, we check in on how much a specific offense relies on its tight ends.
Now taking this all one step further, here's a further breakdown of said stats.
The Small Group
Only six tight ends currently boast target percentages of 20-plus. Of those six, the only tight end not tight end not in the top 10 among his position in fantasy points is Jason Witten. He ranks 10th overall. It shouldn't be considered a surprise that targets equate to fantasy points. But this is more prevalent at tight end than it is at wide receiver when it comes to targets and running back when it comes to touches.
Delanie Walker's Excellence
After finishing last season as the third-best fantasy tight end, Walker finds himself ranked in the top five again this season. This, despite the fact that he missed a game and a half to injury. Some of this could have to do with his tremendous 65 percent catch rate, but it's readily apparent that Marcus Mariota relies on Walker a great deal. After all, he ranks fourth in target distribution. That matches up swimmingly with his No. 4 fantasy ranking. Also important to note, Walker ranks sixth in fantasy consistency.
Dennis Pitta's Fantasy Struggles
This Baltimore Ravens tight end ranks third at his position in receptions and fourth in targets. He also grades out in the top 10 in target distribution. Despite this, Pitta has acted as nothing more than a bottom end TE1 option heading into 15. His 3.1 percent touchdown rate and 5.9 yards per target both surely have played a role in this. Don't be fooled by Pitta's tremendous receptions and target numbers. He's failed to be a TE1 option for the vast majority of the season.
The Patriots Tight End Factory
No Rob Gronkowski? No Problem. Martellus Bennett has performed favorably in his stead, putting up the seventh-most fantasy points among tight ends heading into Week 15. Sure Tom Brady plays a role here, but Bennett himself has been really good. He ranks just 11th in receptions, 18th in targets and 13th in target distribution. Despite this, Bennett has been among the most-consistent fantasy performers on the season.
Don't Sleep on Cameron Brate
Here's a guy that's also doing the most with his targets. Brate heads into Week 15 as the eighth-best fantasy tight end despite recording the 12th-most targets and ranking 12th in target distribution. The better news here for those who are relying on him in the fantasy playoffs: Brate has recorded five-plus targets in six of the past seven games. This means that Jameis Winston is surely relying on him more.
