There are currently 18 quarterbacks on pace for 4,000-plus passing yards, including seven that are on pace for over 4,500 passing yards. To put this into perspective, only seven quarterbacks hit the 4,000-yard plateau a decade ago.
This makes the passing yardage totals almost obsolete when it comes to the fantasy football world. It's more about touchdown percentage and fantasy opportunities than anything else. Of the 18 quarterbacks currently on pace to hit that 4,000-yard mark, only six are also on pace to throw 30-plus touchdowns.
These are the truly elite fantasy quarterbacks. The ones you should be targeting if you have an surplus of talent elsewhere. And in reality, there isn't much of a difference between them. That's the biggest key to look at here.
Also important to note, the drop off from these six to the other QB1 options is significant.
Kirk Cousins ranks as a QB1 option through five weeks, but he's averaging nearly 10 fantasy points (FanDuel) less than Matt Ryan per game. That's an amazing split between two quarterbacks that were neck in neck when it comes to preseason ADP.
This is magnified by the fact that Cousins himself, as the 12th-best fantasy quarterback, is separated from Blaine Gabbert (19th overall) by two points per game.
Even more so than the running back position (we'll touch on that later today), this is where the money is going to be won. If you boast one of these six quarterbacks, you're in a great position. If you need a top-end signal caller, be prepared to pay top-money for him.
