Update: We will have more information when it becomes available.
Prior to an injury-filled 2014 campaign that saw him miss five games, veteran running back Pierre Thomas had put up some productive seasons for the New Orleans Saints since entering the league as an undrafted free agent back in 2007.
So it had to be a surprise to many that he was still unsigned with training camps kicking off.
That's about to change with the news that Houston Texans running back Arian Foster suffered a groin injury this week that's going to require surgery and likely force him on to short-term injured reserve. Just a day after that news broke, the Texans are reportedly prepared to sign Thomas as an attempt to help replace Foster in the backfield.
Once the summer months came calling, Thomas likely made the decision to hold off until training camp to find a new team. He has a unique set of skills that fits best in certain schemes. Waiting to see how situations played out and what injuries came up made the most sense here.
And now, Thomas finds himself in an ideal situation in a Rick Dennison and Bill O'Brien led offense in Houston. The expectation here has to be that Thomas will split time with incumbent backup Alfred Blue until Foster potentially returns in the second half of the season.
Thomas, 30, has yet to put up as much as 800 rushing yards in a single season during his nine-year NFL career. Though, mainly due to the Saints offensive scheme and his own receiving ability, the veteran has tallied over 900 total yards four times. He's also averaging 58 receptions per season since the start of the 2011 campaign.
