Young Players to Watch in Thursday's NFL Preseason Action

Preseason games aren't really good for much if you ask me. They're usually reserved for the fans to get a look at new players and the coaches to understand where youngsters fit into their new scheme.

In terms of evaluating where a football team stands as a whole, it is pretty meaningless.

That being said, there is one thing that all fans can look for when it comes to preseason games...Fantasy football. We will be able to view some of the most talented young players in the game prior to draft season that takes place later this month.

Continuing on that theme, I am going to take a look at some youngsters you should checkout in tonight's preseason lineup.

Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver, Chicago Bears

Some were surprised to see the South Carolina product fall to the Bears in the second round of April's draft. He seems to have the size and speed to be a dominating No. 1 type of receiver on the outside.

All indications out of Bears camp is that Jeffery is excelling expectations and is fully prepared to surprise skeptics as a rookie in 2012. The rookie receiver may be nothing more than a waiver wire pickup (38 receptions, 520 yards and three touchdowns) according to ESPN projections.

With Brandon Marshall in the mix, it is hard to imagine Jeffery making a huge fantasy impact as a rookie this season. Instead, he is someone you might want to take a chance with in dynasty leagues.

Julio Jones, Wide Receiver, Atlanta Falcons

Jones was beyond amazing for the Falcons as a rookie last season, recording nearly 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. With their move towards a more pass happy offense, you can definitely expect Jones to see his numbers increase in his sophomore season.

Being the first preseason game, you can't expect Atlanta to play their starters more than a couple series. That being said, it will be interesting to see how much Jones has developed during the offseason going up against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense.

Stevan Ridley, Running Back, New England Patriots

The second-year running back from Louisiana State is listed as the Patriots starting running back heading into their first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints tonight. Ridley, who performed extremely well in limited action as a rookie, seems to have what it takes to be a fantasy sleeper.

Considering that the Patriots are holding somewhat of an open competition at running back, you can expect them to want to give Ridley a nice deal of reps during the preseason. You can definitely expect me to take a long, hard look at him tonight and you should do the same. In short, Ridley could be a solid under-the-radar RB2 option.

Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Washington Redskins

Starting quarterbacks usually play one or two drives in the preseason opener. This will not be the case when it comes to RGIII tonight. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft is going to take every snap as a rookie this season as long as he stays healthy. In the process, he is going to be in the QB2 conversation when fantasy drafts roll around.

I want to see the reigning Heisman Trophy Winner in real game NFL action. I want to see how he handles pressure in the pocket and utilizes check downs, something that wasn't a necessity at Baylor. It will also be interesting to see how RGIII grasps the Redskins' complex offense after an entire offseason.
