There are plenty of players in the NHL that are overrated and this article will cover the top ten. Let's see who makes it onto the list.
10. Rick Nash, New York Rangers
Nash was aquired via a trade and was expected to be the next star player. Although he has been good in the regular season each of the past two seasons, he really hasn't been a star. In the playoffs, he's been a ghost and has gone on some really bad cold streaks. There were even rumors that he may be bought out by New York but it never happened. One more playoff season like he had this year and he may very well find himself a free agent.
9. Brad Richards, Chicago Blackhawks
Brad Richard was in a Rangers uniform for a few seasons and was one of the most overrated players in the league. He was eventually bought out by the Rangers this past summer and was signed to a one year deal by Chicago. Richards just wasn't playing well these past couple seasons whether it was the regular season or the playoffs. We'll see if he does better in Chicago with a much different role.
8. Ryan Kesler, Anaheim Ducks
Kesler has been on the decline the past few seasons even though he's been scoring. The problem for Kesler is that he has been hurt every season which has forced him to miss a big chunk of time every season. That's the biggest reason why Kesler is overrated.
7. Matt Niskanen, Washington Capitals
Niskanen has played for the Penguins the past few seasons and this past season was his best one yet. He was one of the best defenseman in the league and it showed. He got paid big bucks this season by the Capitals as he signed a seven year deal worth more than five million a year. This was still his only good season in his NHL career so you don't know if he will be as good as he was last season.
6. Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins
You may feel a little shocked that he is on this list but it's true. So many people value Bergeron as a top ten player in the league and he really isn't. He's a great player but people overrate him so often. Bergeron has the potential to be a top ten player in the game possibly but he just isn't there yet.
5. Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins
Chara is a very good defenseman but people overrate him too and I agree competely. He's not a top five defenseman anymore and the stats show it. He's getting older by the day and a lot of new and really good NHL defenseman are stepping up and taking his place. He also doesn't put up near the stats that he used to.
4. Brooks Orpik, Washington Capitals
Orpik had played for the Penguins for a long time and the past couple seasons he has also showed that he is getting old. Orpik is known for his physical play on the ice not his scoring. He can still be a physical force for the Capitals but he's going to be a lot slower than he has been for the past couple seasons. I'm sure Washington will regret paying him that monster contract as well.
3. Dion Phaneuf, Toronto Maple Leafs
Dion can hit and that's pretty much it. He's not known for being a scoring defenseman at all. There have been so many trade rumors surrounding him over the years as well. Maybe he will be a lot better this season, who knows.
2. Ryan Miller, Vancouver Canucks
Miller hasn't been the same dominant goaltender like he used to. He played at Buffalo for most of last season before being traded to the St Louis Blues team that had a very good chance of winning the Stanley Cup. He was part of the reason why the Blues lost another 2-0 series lead to the Chicago Blackhawks after he allowed some very poor shots passed him. Vancouver signed him to a three year deal this past offseason worth eightmillion which is six million a year for him. Are you kidding me? Vancouver is going to wish they never paid him that money after they see that Miller is indeed overrated.
1. Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
Alexander the Great used to be one of the most feared players in the league. Well, he isn't really feared right now if you ask me. People think he's a top three player in the league and they are gravely mistaken. You can't put Ovechkin up there with Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews or even John Tavares. Put Getzlaf up there too. Ovechkin will still score over 40 goals a season like he normally does but he won't rack up many assists. To sum it up, he's not the same player he used to be.
