10 Players That Could Be On The Trading Block When The NHL Returns

Believe it or not, besides all of the hockey hype surrounding the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games, there still is what will be an exciting back half of the NHL season to be played. Games will start up once again on Tuesday, February 25th when the Buffalo Sabres welcome in the Carolina Hurricanes to Upstate New York. Buffalo is one of the many teams who are thought of to be sellers come this season’s trade deadline on March 5 at 3PM EST.

While the hockey world centers its focus on the final weekend of Olympic competition in Sochi, there are a certain few whose minds are elsewhere. There are plenty of savvy veterans, journeymen and young studs that could very well find themselves looking for a new apartment in a new city come March 5th, as teams across the NHL attempt to make a push for the playoffs and beyond.

Here are 10 players that could be on the trading block when the NHL resumes next week:

10. Ray Whitney

The Dallas Stars’ forward has been on eight teams during his 24 year career and there’s no reason to believe that there isn’t any room for one more. Whitney would add some veteran leadership to a team that finds themselves at the top of their conference but lacking in playoff experience throughout their roster.

9. Tuomo Ruutu

Like Whitney, Ruutu could offer up some veteran leadership to a team poised for playoff hockey. However, teams should be aware that the Carolina Hurricane only has one instance of playoff experience to his name and could succumb to the pressure rather than doing what he can to keep a dressing room calm.

8. Nikolai Kulemin

After doing a solid job for an underachieving Russian club in Sochi, GM’s across the NHL were exposed to Kulemin’s versatility on the penalty kill, power play and while on even strength. The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to need an upgrade up front if they want to make a push past the first-round of playoff action. Packaging Kulemin along with someone like backup goaltender James Reimer could help land someone who could be a force up the middle of the ice.

7. Mike Cammalleri

The Calgary Flames may be one of the teams considered to be a seller come March 5th, and if that’s the case, Cammalleri will no doubt be the first to go.  It’s no surprise that Cammalleri has underachieved while playing for the Flames as he doesn’t have the luxury of being surrounded by supreme talent. He would definitely make some noise in the playoffs for a team like the New York Rangers or Tampa Bay Lightning.

6. Sam Gagner

The Edmonton Oilers are another team that has once again failed to put their recent youth movement to fruition. They have arguably the most talented group of young players in the NHL and yet they can’t seem to put enough wins together to get out of the Western Conference’s basement. The high draft picks haven’t done anything for them so they have no choice but to entertain any trade offer sent their way. Gagner will surely be the subject of many phone calls made up to Edmonton.

5. Thomas Vanek

Now that the New York Islanders have lost John Tavares for the duration of the season to the knee injury he sustained in Sochi, Vanek’s job in Long Island may be safer than it was three days ago. However, the Islanders may choose to start from scratch and send the left-winger to a team that is already a contender in exchange for some young talent that will compliment Tavares in the near future.

4. Matt Moulson

Among many other things, the Moulson experiment in Buffalo clearly isn’t working. It’s clear that the Buffalo Sabres will be sellers on or before March 5th and Moulson is sure to be the subject of many trade talks. The left-winger would offer much needed late in the game energy to a team that could find themselves in some long and tight series down the stretch. The Sabres could definitely get a decent package of young and talented players in return as they embark on a rebuilding stage.

3. Olli Jokinen

Jokinen is on the tail-end of his career and is distinguished as the savvy veteran that every playoff team could use on their quest for the cup.  The Winnipeg Jets are on the cusp of becoming a great team and they are well aware that Jokinen’s days in the NHL are almost numbered. They have about two weeks to realize that they can get something solid in return by sending the flying Fin elsewhere.

2. Ryan Miller

Rumors have been circling around Miller since the beginning of the season and it looks as though trade talks surrounding the goaltender are about to reach its pinnacle. There are numerous amounts of teams that could use the USA Olympian’s services down the stretch and into the Stanley Cup playoffs. Now that the Sabres have made it well aware that they are interested in rebuilding their product on the ice, Miller should be the first to go.

1. Ryan Callahan

It’s become evident that the New York Rangers clearly can’t afford Callahan’s asking price when it comes to the forward signing a new contract. It’s in the Rangers’ best interest to at least try and get something in exchange for the crafty forward before they ultimately lose him to free agency. In the coming days, don’t expect Callahan to be traded for young talent. The Rangers will need to exchange him straight up for someone that can immediately fill his shoes as they make their way into the playoffs.
