Despite outshooting their opponent 41-19 on Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Kings could not complete the sweep of the New York Rangers, dropping Game Four at Madison Square Garden by a slim 2-1 margin.
The Hockey Gods clearly wanted this series to go at least one more game.
Game Five at Staples Center in Los Angeles could see the Kings skate the Stanley Cup around home ice for the second time in three seasons, but will they get the job done? Despite winning the first three games of the series, nothing is guaranteed.
Remember, the Kings themselves faced and overcame an 0-3 deficit in the first round against the San Jose Sharks, and the Rangers were down three games to one against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round.
A 3-1 lead may seem comfortable, but winning Game Five and closing the series out on Friday night is absolutely crucial for the Los Angeles Kings. A loss would mean a Game Six in Madison Square Garden, where Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist has been unbelievable while facing elimination. A loss in a potential Game Six would mean a winner-take-all Game Seven in which anything can happen.
Los Angeles wants to finish this thing off at home before letting things get dicey. The Kings come out flying and take a quick 2-0 lead in the first behind goals by Drew Doughty and Tanner Pearson. Before the first period ends, Brian Boyle cuts the lead in half and gets his Rangers on the board.
The only goal of the second goes the home team's way as Dwight King puts one past Lundqvist about halfway through the period.
In the third, Benoit Pouliot will take another costly penalty for the Rangers and Anze Kopitar will give the Kings a 4-1 lead. Mats Zuccarello nets one for the Rangers, but Trevor Lewis answers and Los Angeles will win the game by a score of 5-2.
Dustin Brown will accept the Stanley Cup from commissioner Gary Bettman, Justin Williams will take home the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP and the Kings will skate the Stanley Cup around home ice once again.
