This past week Ryan Kesler got a huge contract from the Anaheim Ducks which pays him just over 6.8 million per year. The exact deal was six years worth 41.25 million. He was going to be a UFA next year but the Ducks were quick to lock him up. There are plenty of more big free agents as of right now going into next season. Which ones will get paid just like Kesler? Let's take a look.
Mark Giordano, Calgary Flames
Giordano had the best season of his career last year for Calgary and almost seemed like a lock for the Norris trophy until he suffered a season-ending injury. He had 11 goals and 37 assists through 61 games before he got hurt so expect him to be even better next season. The Flames have no choice but to lock up Giordano but he's already got a big asking price. The rumored asking price for him is up to eight million per year, which is insane. He's already 30 years old so he's looking for his last contract in the league most likely. Calgary will lock him up whether it's before the season starts or in season as he is their best defenseman and a guy they can't afford to lose.
Anze Kopitar, LA Kings:
Kopitar is the best forward on the Kings right now and it's not close at all. He is going into his last deal with the Kings and LA has made it clear that he is their number one priority and that they plan to sign him to a long term deal. I wouldn't doubt that at all. The Kings should be back in the playoffs next season and for many years to come and one of the biggest reasons as to why is because of Kopitar. He's one of the best two-way centers in the game and pretty much do whatever. Look for him to get a six or seven year deal worth around six to 7 million per year or maybe even higher.
Jakub Voracek, Philadelphia Flyers:
Voracek had another outstanding season for the Flyers this past season and frankly it was his best to date. He had 22 goals and 59 assists this season and will most likely top that next season as well. Even though Voracek will likely be locked up, the Flyers are in cap hell right now. They'll have to free up some salary to likely make the extension work but Voracek is the second best player on the Flyers and they will need him in order to make the playoffs.
Derek Stepan, New York Rangers:
Like the Flyers, the Rangers face cap hell, which was why they had to deal Carl Hagelin at the draft and may be forced to deal someone else after they sign Stepan. Stepan is one of the best Ranger forwards and he will most likely be paid around seven million a year for about seven years. New York will most likely try to take one or two more runs with this current group before a lot of their players are UFA's but Stepan will be apart of it for the long haul.
Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning:
How could we forget about him? The Lightning captain is going into the final year of his contract and there is no way he's leaving the Bolts. Stamkos is one of the best players in the league (top five in my opinion) and he will get paid like one. Expect Stamkos to get upwards of eight million per year or possibly nine per year in a huge deal.
