Analyzing the David Perron Trade

The first big trade of the NHL seaon came last week when the Edmonton Oilers shipped forward David Perron to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Rob Klinkhammer and a first-round draft pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. What does this trade mean for both sides? Let's take a look.

Penguins: Pittsburgh gets its long awaited top six winger that the team has needed all season long due to injuries and illnesses. Perron is going to play with Sidney Crosby to start with to see how he plays. Perron is a legitimate goal scorer and has reached 20 goals three times in his career, including last season when he got to 28 goals in Edmonton. Perron is under contract for the rest of this season and next season for the Penguins, so there's no doubt he could easily get to 30 goals playing with Sidney Crosby or maybe even 40.

Oilers: The Oilers get another first-round pick in a very deep NHL Draft this year so they could end up with Connor McDavid(if they get the number one overall pick) and another very talented player in the first round. The Penguins didn't really need that pick because it's obvious that Jim Rutherford wants them to win a cup now since Crosby and Malkin are still in their prime. Edmonton also gets forward Rob Klinkhammer from the Penguins, who acquired him from Arizona about a month ago. Klinkhammer provies the Oilers with some depth in the bottom six and I think he will be slotted on the fourth line there.

Who Won: This trade benefited both teams but, the Penguins won the trade. They didn't even have to trade one of their top young defensemen in Derrick Pouliot or Scott Harrington. I'm sure Jim Rutherford will be looking to maybe add one more winger before the trade deadline in March but the price to get one may cost one of their best young defenseman.
