The shortened season has given everything a frantic pace, and since the season has already finished the first quarter it is time to think who should be traded. Players in fantasy hockey should be moved and dealt just like stock on Wall Street. The key for having success is getting them cheap, riding them to the top and cashing out before the walls come crashing down. There are some players who have been off to a hot start, but now is the time to send them packing before they take your team down with them.
Thomas Vanek, Buffalo Sabres
Thomas Vanek is usually a top scorer, so most owners think that he is for real, but his problems are not his fault. Vanek plays for Buffalo who are improving, but still have some work to do. Buffalo is mostly a one line team, and when other teams pick up on that they will start to shut them down. Vanek has been great so far, but now is the time to cut ties before the offense dries up.
Craig Anderson, Ottawa Senators
Craig Anderson has found his home in Ottawa, and has completely tuned around his career. The Senators have been off to a great start, and that has been largely due to the great play from Anderson. Putting Anderson on the trading block is not because he will self-destruct, but it is because now the time is right. There are obviously owners who have weak goaltenders, and Anderson will never have higher value. If an Anderson owner can find a desperate owner, they could take whatever they want.
Patrick Marleau, San Jose Sharks
Patrick Marleau has had one of the best starts that an NHL player can have. The points and goals that Marleau has put up have been amazing, but owners need to remember that he is Patrick Marleau. Marleau has been the definition of an average fantasy player over the past several years, and what would make this season any different? The numbers have already started coming back down, and they will continue to go back to normal. Trading Marleau would be a great idea to pick up some players who will be more consistent for the rest of the season.
David Clarkson, New Jersey Devils
David Clarkson had a great playoff run last season, and has continued his production this year. Clarkson has picked up some of the slack that was left when Zach Parise skipped town, but it isn’t realistic to think the numbers will continue for Clarkson. Clarkson is in a contract year, so he will have the drive to keep going but the wheels will fall off eventually, so trade now before it gets that far.
