The closer we get to the NHL playoffs, the more desperate teams in the hunt become. This provides two main scenarios to keep an eye on for DFS purposes: the more desperate teams will try to open the game up a bit (accepting more risk) while teams feeling more comfortable will try to slow the game down (more risk averse). Then, of course, you have the spoilers: rivalries, divisional games, and straight up mismatches. Let’s go through each game and attempt to identify some games that we will want to target in our lineups tonight.
1. Vancouver Canucks – As previously mentioned, the top line of Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, and Alexandre Burrows have elite puck possession numbers. The Avalanche have poor numbers here and give up an average of 32 shots per game, third most in the NHL. Expect this line to busy and the power play to eat up time in the Colorado zone when given the chance. Semyon Varlamov has been given a huge workload lately and was yanked early last night against Edmonton, and this will mark his third game in four nights. That is a lot to ask of any goalie, especially one with a recent injury history and playing with team in front of him that can’t control the puck enough to take some of the pressure off.
