Early 2014-15 Fantasy Hockey Rankings: Top-10 Right Wings

Who says it’s too early to get your 2014-15 NHL fantasy hockey fix? Those that start researching now are surely the ones that will find themselves reaping the benefits come this time next year. Today, we are going to focus on a position that is chock-full of talent all across the league, in both the Eastern and Western Conferences. There were a lot of right wingers that continued to make their mark this past regular season, and there’s no reason to think that they won’t continue to do the same, among others as well.

Here’s an early look at the top 10 fantasy hockey right wingers heading into the NHL’s 2014-15 regular season.

10. Martin St. Louis- New York Rangers

With a new team came a new sense of optimism for St. Louis, a right winger that is notorious for making those around him better, no matter what situation he finds himself in. It’s the fact that St. Louis was +13 during the 2013-14 regular season that should make him a late round steal come your draft in September. Despite his age, don’t be afraid to take him whenever you can.

9. Jaromir Jagr- New Jersey Devils

Even though Jagr has officially retired from international hockey competition, it doesn’t mean he won’t be ready to have another stellar season for the Devils in 2014-15. How many other 42-year olds can put up 67 points while maintaining an impressive +/- of +16? That’s right…nobody. Take a stab at Jagr come the seventh or eighth round of your draft. You won’t be disappointed.

8. Jarome Iginla- Boston Bruins

Iginla failed to get what he thinks he rightfully deserves in 2013-14. That being a Stanley Cup ring with the Boston Bruins. Despite being 36-years old, expect Iginla to have another productive season in 2014-15, as he tries his best to get the monkey off of his back of not yet being crowned a Stanley Cup champion. He undoubtedly has another 30+ goal season left in his repertoire.

7. Blake Wheeler- Winnipeg Jets

Although the Jets are not going to be favorites to cement a playoff spot right off the bat next season, Wheeler has the ability to be a main stay in your lineup due to his durability. Wheeler was able to play in all 82 games for the Jets this past season, while putting up 69 points by the end. Durability is huge in fantasy hockey, especially at the forward position. Wheeler should be looked at by the fifth round of your draft.

6. Alex Ovechkin- Washington Capitals

Yes, Ovechkin lead the league in goals with 51. Yes, he is one of the most talented players in the world. However, Ovechkin was a terrible -35 for the season in 2013-14 and that number shouldn’t change much going into next season. The Capitals are an absolute disaster in regards to their overall balance as a team. I don’t care how many goals he scores, Ovechkin shouldn’t crack the top five of any top 10 right winger list as long as he lacks the ability to play defense.

5. Patrick Kane- Chicago Blackhawks

As long as Kane is a member of the Blackhawks, he should be coveted as an early round pick for those skating up the right side of the ice. Even though they are struggling to keep up with the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference finals, the Blackhawks have arguably the most talented group of players that the NHL has seen on one team in the last two decades. With plenty of great players surrounding him and keeping him grounded, Kane will continue to impress in 2014-15 in the windy city.

4. Jordan Eberle- Edmonton Oilers

Try not to pay any attention to the -11 that Eberle put up this past season when you go into your draft for next season. The Oilers have been bad for what seems like forever, even though they have had top draft picks for what seems like forever as well. In 2014-15, something has got to give. Expect Eberle to not have any problems putting up a 30+ goal season, leading the Oilers to at least a shot at making the post season. You may be able to grab Eberle as late as the thirteenth or fourteenth round.

3. Jakub Voracek- Philadelphia Flyers

Voracek is ready to make the next step in his career and take his game to the next level. Claude Giroux has served as a fine mentor to the right winger, helping him have a fantastic season in 2013-14 where he managed to score 23 goals and rack up 39 helpers. He may be a dark horse to surpass those mentioned above, but there’s plenty of reason to believe that Voracek is indeed the real deal.

2. Phil Kessel- Toronto Maple Leafs

With Brendan Shanahan now running the show in Toronto, expect the Leafs to get that top center that the city has been starving for.  With that center will come even better play from the speedy Kessel that managed to solidify himself as one of the league’s most prolific and dangerous goal scorers. After scoring 37 goals in 2013-14, a 50-goal season isn’t too far out of the reach of the sniper from Wisconsin. With one of the best shots in the league, I would most definitely pick Kessel within the first three rounds of your draft.

1. Corey Perry- Anaheim Ducks

Although not at all flashy, Perry is by far the most talented right winger in the NHL. After tallying 82 points and maintaining a +/- of +32 this past regular season, Perry shouldn’t make it past the first round of your fantasy hockey draft.  Perry excels in all facets of the game and it seems as though he gets better each and every season. In my book, Perry is a top five pick, and maybe even higher in 2014-15. Just because the Ducks can’t cut it in the playoffs, it doesn’t mean you need to miss out on what their most talented player has to offer in the regular season.
