Fantasy Hockey 2013: Diamonds in the Rough

Just because a player isn’t currently on a fantasy roster, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a certain amount of value. If you’re like me, you struggle to add a player that has caught fire because it means letting go of someone who might be more consistent in the long run. The fantasy sports world is hardly a sprint, and the flavor of the week can flame out faster than you can say Cal Clutterbuck.

These players might not be able to turn your season around, but if you can procure their services on the short term, you could potentially trade up  for a better player while the value is white hot.

Here is a look at players who are available in most leagues that can help your squad. At eDraft we call this the fantasy leftovers.

Teddy Purcell, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning (66% owned)

Purcell has found himself on the right wing of Steven Stamkos. This alone means that he will be on the ice for about 20 more Stamkos lasers with the potential of assisting on many of them and/or knocking in a rebound.

Kyle Turris, C, Ottawa Senators(54% owned)

With the injury bug that has bitten Ottawa mercilessly and repeatedly, Turris is the number one center. His faceoff numbers and overall production have spiked, so he’s worth a look if you need to improve in the faceoff circle.

Damien Brunner, RW/C, Detroit Red Wings (51% owned)

The Red Wings have also been brutalized by injuries this year and one of their leading goal scorers is currently available in almost half of every fantasy league. Brunner takes a ton of shots and plays on a line with Henrik Zetterberg. Those two facts make him a worthy, low-risk investment.

Nazem Kadri, C, Toronto Maple Leafs-(36% owned)

This is the breakout year that Maple Leaf fans have been waiting for, albeit an abbreviated one. Kadri has had steady and impressive production for the Leafs and can now consider himself a regular on the NHL roster. Solid faceoff numbers and points from Toronto’s second line center man.

Brandon Prust, LW, Montreal Canadiens(18% owned)

The rugged wing has made a name for himself in Montreal, taking on the role of resident tough guy. The Canadiens resurgence to the top of the league has Prust riding a statistical wave of success too. If you are looking to bump your hits and PIMs, look no further than Montreal’s frisky left wing.
