Fantasy Hockey 2013: Fantasy Leftover Picks 2.0

If your fantasy hockey season hasn’t gone according to plan you still have a few options. There is still time to turn your season around, Champ, so pick up that head and you better get that word quit out of your mouth.

There have been some huge, season changing injuries and chances are, there’s going to be a few more before we get to the playoff stretch. In a sport as violent as ice hockey the risk of injury is very real for every game. Any and every player is at risk for a season-altering elbow or a stray Matt Cooke skate blade.

You can attempt to dig out of your rut by making some mega-blockbuster deals, but if your team is that bad, chances are you have a shortage of “trade-able” talent. Your other option, and most reliable option is to snap up some of the choice free agents left in the player pool.

Here at eDraft, we are happy to provide you with your best fantasy options with what we call fantasy hockey leftovers. Here is the top five:

5. Ben Bishop, G, Ottawa Senators

Bishop’s claim to fame is that he is the biggest goalie in the NHL. At 6’7” Bishop takes up most of the goal just by standing in front of it. However, with Ottawa regular Craig Anderson out with injury, Bishop has shown that he can be more than just a sheet of human plywood. Anderson will be the starter whenever he comes back, but Bishop is good for a spot start to spell Ottawa’s regular.

4. Jonathan Huberdeau, C, Florida Panthers

Huberdeau may be a year or two from real stardom, but he is producing points on a bad Florida team right now. If Florida can get their act together, it will certainly improve the status of the young Florida center. Warning though, Huberdeau is listed as a center and is terrible at face-offs.

3. Saku Koivu, C, Anaheim Ducks

The ageless, indomitable Finnish center is still getting it done at age 38. He has 17 points through the Ducks first 18 games, is still an ace in the faceoff circle and is also a plus 10. Snag him while you can because he is still available in 59% of all Yahoo leagues.

2. Brayden Schenn, C/LW, Philadelphia Flyers

The less physical of the “Flying” Schenn brothers, Brayden has emerged as more than just a defensive center option for Philadelphia. With 18 points in Philadelphia’s first 21 games Schenn is a star on the rise for the suddenly resurgent Flyers.

1. Damien Brunner, C/RW, Detroit Red Wings

He should hardly be considered a sleeper or even leftovers at this point but Detroit’s newest sniper is still only owned in 66% of all Yahoo leagues. His four-point night against Vancouver last weekend should have served as a coming out party of sorts to anyone who hadn’t heard his name by now.
