Fantasy Hockey 2013: Goaltender Busts

When any fantasy owner drafts their team, they often draft some big name goaltenders who they expect to dominate their matchups. Most fantasy owners, (especially the ones who bet large on the success of Ilya Bryzgalov) know that things don’t always go according to plan. So far the 2013 season has had some booming goaltenders, but there are also some much more frustrating bust goaltenders.

Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings knew that this season would be hard, not only because of the condensed time frame, but because they were going to have to adjust to life without Lidstrom. The Wings have struggled, and goaltender Howard is no exception.

Howard has a GAA above three and a save percentage under 900. The big change on defense clearly makes things harder for Howard, and the Central Division being loaded from top to bottom doesn’t help either. Detroit has been a playoff mainstay for years, but the strange season has had quite the effect on the Wings and Howard.

Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings

Quick had a rough start to the season, but that is understandable when you combine a strange offseason with some surgery. The Kings and Quick both got off on the wrong foot, but nobody can blame them since they never got to fully enjoy their season as the defending champions. Quick has played much better as the season has gone on, and while he might be a big bust at the start, things can change very quickly in a shortened season.

Anders Lindback, Tampa Bay Lightning

When Lindback signed with the Lightning people had no idea what to expect from him because he was never given the starting job before. The season started and Lindback seemed to be struggling, but that was overlooked since he is the backstop for an offensive powerhouse.

After a few weeks of being the big man on campus, Lindback has settled into his role as the starter and his play has improved. Fantasy owners have been let down by Lindback so far, but they are slowly warming to his Swedish ways.
