The Minnesota Wild were the toast of the NHL two years ago. Around this time in 2012, the Wild were busy patting themselves on the back after the biggest coup in NHL free agent history.
Zach Parise and Ryan Suter signed identical $98 million deals over the course of the 2012 free agency bonanza making Minnesota a playoff team immediately. The two stars have helped the “State of Hockey” enjoy the Stanley Cup playoffs over the last two seasons, but have been sent packing in the early rounds.
It certainly takes more than two players to bring a Stanley Cup home, but the Wild are certainly headed in the right direction. Goaltending inconsistencies have plagued them the past two years, and there are some question marks on the blue line.
Thomas Vanek is the jewel of their free agent shopping spree and will certainly benefit from the playmaking vision of Parise and Mikko Koivu. He immediately gives the Wild power play some teeth, an area they have lacked the last few years of Mike Yeo’s coaching tenure.
Here’s a look at the top five fantasy hockey options on the Minnesota Wild.
Zach Parise, LW
The All Star wing just turned 30 and will be looking to improve on the 29 goals and 56 points from 2013-14. Injuries forced Parise to miss 15 games, but with some more scoring depth on the roster, the Wild might not need to lean so heavily upon him. It’s hard to imagine that Parise’s stock has fallen so drastically in 24 months but he’s no longer a top 25 pick. He’s arguably a top ten left wing, but only take him on the outside of the first three rounds.
Ryan Suter, D
By comparison, Suter has improved his stock measurably since joining the Wild. He received Norris Trophy consideration in 2013 and may have been just as good or better last season. His stats across the board were exceptional in 2013-14, including the fancy advanced variety. Suter is certainly a top five defenseman and regard him as such. People draft defense differently, but consider him a viable pick in the first four rounds regardless of your methods.
Jason Pominville, RW
The first of two Buffalo Sabre rejects, or castoffs, or escapees was the leading scorer for the Wild last season. He edged out Parise for the goal scoring lead with 30 while adding 30 helpers. Though he is getting up in years (32 in November, ha, that’s old these days!), Pominville is still a legitimate option for the right wing. He’ll be available in the seventh and eighth rounds so snap him up for a value pick.
Thomas Vanek, LW
While I can never profess to be a Vanek fan, or apologist, the numbers (and dollars $$$) continue to suggest that Vanek is an elite level performer. He lived out of a suitcase last season, moving from Buffalo to Long Island before landing in Montreal and still managed 68 points in 78 games. The chemistry with Vanek and Parise will be critical to his success in Minnesota and while he could explode offensively there is still a risk. He’ll be ranked high enough to go in the first four rounds, but I would let someone else grab him.
Mikko Koivu, C
Koivu is a value pick that will destroy with his high faceoff percentage with the added bonus of offensive production. The Wild captain is only 31 but seems like he has been around forever. He put up an impressive 54 points in 65 games (just behind Parise’s production over the same number of games) and could be a sleeper pick. He’ll be available late and is a solid addition to any roster.
