Five Free Agents That Could Help the Toronto Maple Leafs

Although it may seem that the bulk of the work that needed to be done in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ organization was taken care of with the hiring of Brendan Shanahan as the team’s new president, the fact remains that the Leafs still need help in a number of different areas. Shanahan will help immensely down the road, but if the Leafs want to contend for a playoff spot in 2014-15, they will need to visit the free agent front and somehow ink a few players that will solidify Shanahan’s reign over the organization as a solid one.

Here’s a look at five free agents that the Leafs should go after this offseason in hopes to make a return to the playoffs.

5. Patrick Marleau, San Jose Sharks

It’s no surprise that the Leafs lack a sense of veteran leadership. Although a young and dynamic team is what NHL teams strive to be these days, having a savvy veteran on the squad to keep everyone grounded and to lead by example is crucial. Marleau offers just that and the fact that the San Jose Sharks have choked once again, his days in Northern California are most likely over. Marleau would be a huge addition on one of Toronto’s top two lines.

4. Tim Thomas, Dallas Stars

The rollercoaster ride that is Toronto’s goaltending situation needs to come to a halt. James Reimer has been nothing but dead weight and one should expect his days in Toronto to be done after he did nothing but help the club lose eight straight games and miss out on the Stanley Cup playoffs. Having a solid backup goaltender is an important part of any team’s game. Thomas offers that stability. A one-year deal wouldn’t set the Leafs back too much and Jonathan Bernier would finally have a partner in crime that would come to play whenever he is called upon.

3. Brooks Orpik, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Leafs have again and again promised their fans that the backbone of their team is their defense. This part of the team’s game has been nothing but disappointing for a number of years, and with Dion Phaneuf’s brand new hefty contract, things don’t necessarily look as if they will improve anytime soon. Adding a disciplined and dynamic blue-liner such as Orpik would help solidify a Leafs’ defense that has had a lot of trouble helping out their goaltenders the past few seasons. Orpik would serve well alongside fellow USA Olympic hockey team members, Phil Kessel and James Van Riemsdyk.

2. Matt Moulson, Minnesota Wild

After being shopped around in 2013-14, Moulson appears ready to take on a roll with a team that truly wants him and that can use his gritty and up-tempo style of play. The forward is exactly what the Leafs need to get them over the hump and to become more dangerous at the offensive end of the ice. Moulson would undoubtedly improve the third or fourth line, two parts of any hockey team that are extremely underrated.

1. Paul Stastny, Colorado Avalanche

If the Leafs want to complete their top line with a top-notch centerman, Stastny is their man. It appears that his career in Colorado has gone sour and that he will be available this offseason. Stastny would serve as a perfect addition to a line that already has star power in Kessel and van Riemsdyk. Both players have been starving for a number one center to help bring them up the ice and complete what can be one of the most dangerous overall attacks in the NHL. Inking Stastny should be Shanahan’s number one priority this summer.
