Five NHL Teams That Could Use A Uniform Upgrade (With Suggestions)

Although the St. Louis Blues are expected to unveil new uniform designs in the coming weeks, the Anaheim Ducks are the only team to officially release a new uniform thus far this offseason. Several other teams, however, definitely seem due for changes.

Here are the top five teams in need of new threads. (all pictures from NHLuniforms.com)

Buffalo Sabres

The worst team in the NHL in 2013-14 has uniforms that are supposed to resemble their past uniforms, but in reality, they look too futuristic and the piping is completely unnecessary. The dark blue and added gray/silver make all three jerseys drab and boring, and the uniform number on the front of the jersey has to go.

Not to mention, is that the worst third jersey in the history of hockey?

Better Option:

Many people think it was an atrocity that the Sabres ever went away from a gold-and-blue color scheme, but these uniforms from the late-1990s and early-2000s were absolutely fantastic.

If the Sabres want to improve their uniforms in a more subtle way, simply elimiate the piping and jersey numbers on the front, change all gray to white and lighten the blue hue by a few shades.

Carolina Hurricanes

Yes, the Canes just changed their uniforms last season but does anything about the home or road sweaters other than the logo represent a Hurricane? The black alternate is a different story, as it would be perfectly acceptable to keep as a third. Still, the red home jersey looks too much like the Detroit Red Wings home jersey as well as the Team Canada jerseys from the 2010 Olympics. Come to think of it, the away jersey looks just like a Team Canada jersey as well.

Better Option:

Just go back to your pre-Reebok roots, Carolina. The hurricane warning waist stripes and shoulder patches were absolutely genius.

Colorado Avalanche

With the Blues making some changes to their uniforms this offseason, the Avalanche will be one of the only teams left using the cookie-cutter Reebok EDGE template. The colors are fine, but the design has to be more unique for a team filled to the brim with exciting young stars.

Also, the Rangers should be the only team allowed to have its name written diagonally across the front of a uniform.

Better Option:

Don't these jerseys just scream "Avalanche"? Colorado needs to go with a unique striping pattern like the mountainous-looking one it had before Reebok took over the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The design is boring. The color scheme is unique, but also boring.

Funny how one of the NHL's best teams wears some of the NHL's most drab jerseys, eh?

Better Option:

Every Penguin fan wants to see a uniform like this back in circulation. Luckily for Pittsburghers, there is a rumor floating around that the Pens may being this jersey back as a throwback in the very near future. Stay tuned.

Washington Capitals

The Caps' home and road uniforms are ridiculously boring. A dark, drab and overused blue instead of one that stands out added to a bland and unflattering template. Not to mention the inexcusable attempt at re-creating the original "Capitals" wordmark as a logo.

That third jersey, however, may be one of the best looks in all of sports. Leading us to...

Better Option #1:

The Caps could resurrect the old red uniforms for this year's Winter Classic, which they will host on New Year's Day. Hopefully this happens and foreshadows a promotion of the current third jersey to the road sweater as well as a matching red jersey for home games.

But...

Better Option #2:

Now, it was strange that a team named the "Capitals" that played in Washington D.C. did not have a red-white-blue color scheme at one point in time, but apparently they did so for good reason.

This color scheme of a unique blue, black and copper is something not seen in the hockey world while many teams wear red, white and blue. Not to mention that the template is also sharp and unique and the logo would instantly become one of the best in the NHL if resurrected.
