Goaltender Preview: Ryan Miller vs. Carey Price

Ryan Miller and Carey Price are two top level goaltenders with the same flaw that could ruin both of their seasons. The flaw that Miller and Price share is that they both play for teams that don’t offer much help to their individual success.

When it comes to individual talent Miller and Price are both some of the best goaltenders in the league. Unfortunately for them hockey is a team sport, and while the goalie is a very important piece of the team they can’t win games by themselves.

Price is a top choice for a fantasy goaltender, because he can put up great stats and be picked up in later rounds of a draft. Price just got a new contract which means that he has job security and the confidence to be successful. During the 2012 All-Star Skills Competition, Price showed off some of his talents by making trick saves and throwing in a well-executed “Tebow”, which makes him an obvious choice for any fantasy owner.

Ryan Miller should be the best goaltender in the league. Any owner of EA Sports NHL 13 knows that Miller is the top ranked goalie in the game, which means he is clearly the best goaltender in the league.

Miller has had stretches of brilliance in Buffalo, but he has not been able to recapture the magic that made him the Pride of America during the Winter Olympics. Buffalo has new ownership, and is making big improvements for the future.

Miller really is the better choice when the choice is between himself and Carey Price. Miller has the better team and is in a city that is passionate about his team, but does not create excessive pressure like Montreal can from time to time.

Both goaltenders are likely to be late round steals in most fantasy drafts. Miller and Price are top level talent that sometimes gets overlooked because their teams struggle on occasion. In any fantasy draft owners who have loaded up on offence early, should look to goaltenders like Miller and Price to be undervalued additions.
