Grading the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Olympics

There are seven players from the Pittsburgh Penguins representing their country during the Sochi Olympics. Of the seven playing, four countries are represented: Canada, Russia, Finland and the United States. With Russia being bounced on Wednesday, the Pens are still represented well abroad. Here is how we have graded them so far.

Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby is the captain on team Canada team but he really hasn’t found his form during these Olympics. He only has two points and hasn’t scored a goal through four games, which is very odd. There have been some issues with chemistry his line, as coach Mike Babcock has just not found the right combination for Crosby just yet. He’s going to have to step up as they play the red-hot United States on Friday because John Tavares is now out for the rest of the tournament.  Overall grade: C-

Chris Kunitz

Chris Kunitz has been very bad during the Olympics also. He has zero points through four games and has lacked an identity on this Canada team. Many people have started to question why Kunitz is even on this team. He started out on Crosby’s line but then Babcock moved him down to the 4th line due to his struggles. With all of the experience Kunitz has playing with his teammate Crosby, it is hard to imagine why the pair would be split up after one bad game together. Grade: F

Olli Maatta

Young Maatta has been great so far for Finland as they upset Russia today to advance to the semifinals. Maatta played a significant role holding a talented Russian team to only one goal. His play has been excellent and he’s had a pair of goals and assists for his home country. We’ll see if he can continue his great play against the number one seed Sweden on Friday. Grade: B

Jussi Jokinen

Jokinen has been very good for Finland too. He’s had some nice goals and a few assists and he even won a draw this morning against his fellow teammate Evgeni Malkin while they played Russia. Maybe Jokinen was trying to challenge Malkin for the number two center position. Grade: B

Brooks Orpik

Brooks Orpik has not looked too bad for team USA either. Many people questioned USA’s decision to pick Orpik but he’s been good. He got burned on a Datsyuk goal during the Russia game but that’s really the only error he has made. Orpik isn’t known for his speed or puck handling, but he has been a steady, physical veteran presence in front of the American goal. Grade: B-

Paul Martin

Paul Martin has been excellent for team USA too. The defenseman has been paired with his fellow line mate Orpik and it’s worked pretty well. He’s had some good passes and has been very solid while he’s out playing. He faces a true test when he goes out against Canada on Friday. Martin has always been a strong skater adapting well to the wider international ice and has been one of the top defensemen for the United States. Grade: A-

Evgeni Malkin

Evgeni Malkin was just not good for Russia at all in Sochi. He looked unmotivated and indifferent for large portions of Russia’s games. He was skating strong but was hardly dominant against opponents that he should have been outclassing. Let’s hope Malkin can return to form when he comes back to the Penguins after the Olympic break. Grade: F
