Gustav Nyquist Re-signs With the Red Wings

Gustav Nyquist is not heading out of Detroit any time soon. The Red Wing budding star agreed to a four year, $19 million deal. The team seems content with keeping the 25 year old; the deal also includes a no-trade clause.

Nyquist is the team’s top goal scorer over the last two seasons with 55 goals. In 2013-2014, he scored 28 goals in only 57 games to lead the team. With 48 points, he was only a point behind team leaders Daniel Alfredsson and Niklas Kronwall. In 2014-2015 he was second to only Tomas Tatar with 27, and played in every game. He has done this without getting top line minutes; in both seasons he has averaged 16 minutes. He was also tied for third in the NHL with 14 power play goals.

The move to resign Nyquist was not the only big move the Red Wings have made this off-season. Nyquist’s potential new line mate is one of those moves. Brad Richards signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Red Wings coming off winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks. His experience will be great for the young, rapidly improving Tatar and Nyquist on the second line.

With a lack of a clear top line defenseman to go along Niklas Kronwall, the Red Wings grabbed Mike Green. Green has long been the star on the Washington Capitals blue line, proving effective as an offensive minded defender. He earned the nickname “Game Over Green” for his series of game winning goals in 2007-2008. Those goals were a few of his 31 goals for the season, which is quite a feat considering he is a defender. Last season with the Capitals, he scored 45 points to go along with a 15+/-. He has a career point total of 360, and he has not turned 30 yet.

With these moves, along with others, the Detroit Red Wings seem to be putting together a team that could compete for a cup. New coach Jeff Blashill will have a lot to work with in his first season with the team.

At the forward position, the team is led by experience. Pavel Datsyuk is a lock for the Hall of Fame, winning two Stanley Cups, a Hart trophy, and an incredible three Selke Awards for best defensive forward. His linemates Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen return to make one of the most feared first lines in the game. The second line is suspected to be the Richards, Tatar and Nyquist line discussed above. The team also has impressive depth at forward, with players like Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm and Drew Miller among those that round out the forward position.

At the defense, the Mike Green deal really helps. The hard-hitting Swede Kronwall can focus more on the defensive aspects of the game thanks to the team signing the high scoring Green. Kyle Quincey, Jonathan Ericsson, Danny DeKeyser and Jakub Kindl likely round out the defensive unit that had depth before the Green move, but lacked star power.

Petr Mrazek was impressive last post season at goaltender.  He had a 92.5 save percentage to go along with a 2.11 goals against average. Despite the impressive play, the Red Wings still have a goalie controversy. Jimmy Howard has been the starter for the Red Wings, playing 50 or more games in five of the last six seasons. He still has a few more years left on his deal and is considered one of the better American goaltenders in the world. No matter which goalie the Red Wings choose, they can rest easy knowing they will be getting a solid starter and one of the most trustworthy back ups in the NHL.
