Is Sergei Bobrovsky a One-Hit Wonder?

Is Sergei Bobrovsky a One-Hit Wonder?

Every time a goalie has a season like the Columbus Blue Jackets' Sergei Bobrovsky had in 2013, people question whether or not it was a fluke. Bobrovsky nearly led the Jackets, once the joke of the NHL, to a shocking playoff birth and was awarded the Vezina Trophy for the league's best goaltender because of it.

Before last year, his first in Columbus, Bobrovsky spent a couple seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers - AKA the team that cannot find a goalie. He wasn't impressive in Philadelphia (then again, neither has anyone else been in at least 15 years), and the team decided to go in a different direction as Bobrovsky became a Blue Jacket.

To further add to Philly's goaltending woes, Bobrovsky went out and had a season like he just did. Also, former Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who had come off of some great seasons in Phoenix, had two mediocre years in the City of Brotherly Love.

It will be interesting to see what will become of Bobrovsky. If he continues to play at this superstar-caliber level, Philadelphia will be known as the city where good goalies go bad. If he plays like he did in Philly, the Blue Jackets will be right back where people expected them to be last year - the cellar.

We have seen this type of thing before. Very recently, indeed.

In 2012, the St. Louis Blues had a goaltending tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott, and it seemed like neither could do any wrong. Both had been decent goaltenders in their respective careers leading up to that season, but nobody expected them to play at the level that they did. It would have been absurd to expect them to do the same in 2013, and while their play was still solid, they dipped a little bit in production.

This same thing will happen to Bobrovsky; not because he isn't a great goalie, but because duplicating his numbers from last season is a task that is near-impossible. A full season could also affect him, as there will now be more time for him to fall into a slump and not play well, skewing his numbers.

It will also be interesting to see how his new division will affect him. Playing in the Central Division, Bobrovsky frequently had to face players like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Shea Weber. Now, he will face even more superstar-caliber players like Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Rick Nash, Claude Giroux, John Tavares, and Eric Staal.

Expect Bobrovsky to still be one of the league's top-ten or even top-five goaltenders, and think of him as a solid option as the starting goalie of your fantasy team. Do not, however, expect him to duplicate his same unbelievable numbers from 2013.
