NHL 2012: The Return of Scott Gomez, a Juicy Rebound

The NHL is almost at the point where it will be canceling regular season games. With no NHL, all hockey attention in the United States will shift to the minor leagues. Fortunately for Scott Gomez everyone is in the minor leagues or playing overseas, so his current trip to the minors is required and not because of his play.

Gomez spent last season as one of the highest paid players in the NHL. While he was bringing in the dollars, Gomez was failing to up any pucks in the net.

With how bad last season went for Gomez, hockey fans would have to expect that when this NHL season gets started Gomez will have more production. Gomez had two goals and nine assists last season for a grand total of eleven points. Any NHL players is capable of producing what Gomez did last season, so a player who has been good in the past like Gomez should be able to surpass his previous totals.

Gomez did play in fewer games last season than he typically does. With only 38 games played, any player would have a lower point total, but any forward who puts up eleven points is lucky to still be with the NHL club for 38 games.

Returning home to play in the ECHL in his home state of Alaska will be something that is good for Gomez. Playing in Montreal is a high pressure situation for any player, but a player who was struggling like Gomez was would be under fire in Montreal. Some time at home away from the pressure of Montreal might help Gomez get his game back.

If Gomez can get his spot back in the NHL when the season starts, fans can expect him to have a solid rebound season. Gomez isn’t going to have an MVP season where he is contending for the scoring title, but expect him to make a return to being a regular contributor.
