NHL 2013-14: Is Sidney Crosby Having the Best Year of His Career?

The knock on Sidney Crosby has been his knack for picking up injuries. In recent years the Pittsburgh captain has been sidelined by injuries, but not this year.  (Knocks on wood)

This year, Crosby has been on fire, leading the team in points and while helping the Penguins with a strong playoff push. With all that he has accomplished in his short career, is he having his best season yet? Let’s take a closer look.

The answer is YES! He has been by far the best player in the NHL this year. His 33 goals, 58 assists and 91 points leads the rest of the NHL players by almost 20 points. He has carried the team this season with half of the Penguins as AHL players, while over 100 man games have been lost due to various injuries. The Pens have been so banged up this year Crosby has had to play with guys he has probably never heard of before.

There is no doubt that he is running away with the Art Ross Trophy for the scoring race. He is also leading the way for the Ted Lindsay Award for the league’s best player and the Hart Trophy for MVP. Throw in an Olympic gold medal for Team Canada’s captain and it’s hard to argue with the Crosby trophy case for 2013-14.

The health concerns are also a big reason why this has been such an amazing season. Crosby has been banged up the past couple seasons with a laundry list of injuries. The most significant was the concussion that kept him out of action for over a full season. The symptoms were so significant that whispers surfaced that the “Kid’s” career was in jeopardy. After returning from his concussion, Crosby’s own teammate took him out with a deflected slap shot that ended his 2013 regular season.

So far this season, he has not been hurt and has not missed a game. He’s trying to have his first full season since 2007 where he won the Hart Trophy for the Penguins. It’s hard to imagine that Crosby has only had one full season in the last few years and has still been the best player in the world.

Sidney Crosby will continue to dominate the NHL for the rest of the season as he closes in on numerous trophies. Let’s hope he doesn’t peak at the right time since the Penguins are going to need him to peak during a Stanley Cup Playoff run. The perfect ending to Crosby’s remarkable 2014 campaign would be another Stanley Cup win.
