NHL 2013-14: Late Season Fantasy Hockey Additions

The fantasy hockey season is heading down the homestretch with the playoffs only a week away in some leagues. If you are looking for a last minute push there are certainly some free agents to be had on the market with solid availability in all leagues. At this point in the season there are no more real sleepers out there.

The Olympic break has come and now gone, so what you see is pretty much what you’re going to get. Depending on your league you might be able to swing a last minute trade with someone who has given up on their season and turned their focus to who they’ll draft in fantasy baseball. If that’s the case, look at players that have something to play for. Whether a playoff spot in the NHL is on the line or a sweet offseason free agent deal is being lined up, every player has a little something extra to play for.

That being said, no player’s fantasy value got wrecked more than Kyle Okposo over the past month. With the injury to all-world center John Tavares, look for the New York Islander winger’s production to drop considerably. Conversely, Ryan Miller’s value shot through the roof with his trade to a team that can win AND play really, REALLY good defense. Everything I just said about Miller is the exact opposite for Jaroslav Halak. The term “high percentage shooting gallery” comes to mind.

This weekend provided a glimpse of what these guys can do to help your roster reach the playoffs and beyond. And the best part is, they are probably available in your league at this very moment.

Sean Monahan, C-Calgary Flames,  9% owned

Don’t be sad Calgary fans. Monahan is the real deal and he’s just learning how to play in the NHL. Fantasy owners snap him up if you need goals.

Ondrej Pavelec, G-Winnipeg Jets,  65% owned

Pavelec is hot and cold, but at this point in the season you aren’t going to find any good starters out there. Try to catch lightning in a bottle with Winnipeg’s number one.

Jaden Schwartz, C, LW-St. Louis Blues, 54% owned

Multi-position  flexibility is particularly useful this time of year and Schwartz has flown under the radar all season. Positive offensive stats across the board in a breakout season.

Reilly Smith, RW-Boston Bruins, 40% owned

Another breakout star, Smith was a throw in for the Tyler Seguin-Loui Eriksson deal. So far he might be the best part of that deal.

Andrej Sekera, D-Carolina Hurricanes, 44% owned

Possibly the best offensive defenseman that is readily available, Sekera also avoids being a defensive liability with a positive plus/minus.

Kevin Bieksa, D-Vancouver Canucks, 44% owned

Bieksa gives you the most complete defensive numbers across the board with a decent amount of offense to boot.

Martin Hanzal, C-Phoenix Coyotes, 43% owned

The big Phoenix center could be a trade deadline steal with the Coyotes freefalling out of the playoffs. Hanzal gets points, faceoffs and hits which is a rare and productive combination.
