What would hockey be without surprises? Just last season, we saw the Chicago Blackhawks have the best start in NHL history, the Toronto Maple Leafs end their playoff drought, and the Columbus Blue Jackets just barely miss out on the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
We are only two days and six games deep into the 2013-14 NHL season, but there have been all sorts of surprises. Here are some that stand out the most:
Mikhail Grabovski
Is there a better way to start a season than with a hat trick on opening night? Grabovski made his debut with the Washington Capitals doing just that, quieting his critics as soon as he possibly could. He also added an assist for good measure
Despite his best efforts, Grabovski could not help his Capitals defeat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.
Blackhawks Exiles
Speaking of the Blackhawks, some of the players that got their names engraved on the Cup this summer have headed elsewhere. Two of these players, Michael Frolik and David Bolland, have already made an impact.
Frolik scored two goals in his debut with the Winnipeg Jets, leading the team to a come-from-behind victory in the third period in Edmonton.
Bolland, who scored the Cup-clinching goal and was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs less than a week later, added two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers in his second game with the team on Thursday night.
Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche
Patrick Roy’s debut as head coach of the Avalanche went quite well, to say the least.
The Ducks finished second-best in the Western Conference last season, and the Avalanche finished dead last.
The Avs, however, decided to send a message in their home opener, charging to a 6-1 victory over Anaheim.
Jamie McGinn scored twice for Colorado, while the trend of new additions scoring continued as Jakob Silfverberg scored Anaheim’s only goal in his debut with the Ducks.
