NHL 2013-14 Opening Week: Five Games That You Must Watch

If you happen to be sad that the series Breaking Bad ended on Sunday, or that the WNBA playoffs just aren’t quite your thing, then rejoice sports fan: the NHL is BACK!!

If you are a fringe fan or don’t understand icing, that is just fine. Tuesday night the NHL kicks off a full 82-game season with a Stanley Cup banner being raised, and some Canadian teams renewing old acquaintances. With the significant gap of football coverage between Monday night and Thursday, you have no better excuse to tune in to hockey.

Fortunately for you, the curious viewer or the die-hard puckhead, eDraft has you covered on the games that you absolutely need to watch this week. From fantasy matchups to just plain old fashioned delicious matchups, we have you covered. Remember folks, with the lockout last season, we missed out on some juicy interconference rivalries.

5. Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens, Tuesday night 7 p.m. EST

The first puck of 2013-14 will drop in the Montreal Belle Centre as two playoff teams from last season get after it. New Leaf netminder Jonathan Bernier will learn about the storied rivalry between the two clubs. Phil Kessel. Joffrey Lupul and James Van Riemsdyk lead the offense against a stingy Montreal defense. Carey Price in goal and 2013 Norris Trophy winner P.K Subban will have their hands full with their neighbors from Toronto.

4. Toronto Maple Leafs at Philadelphia Flyers, Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

The Leafs start the season with back to back road games and will get an early look to see if Jonathan Bernier is up to the task or if James Reimer will defend his starting position in the Toronto goal. The Flyers open the season at home looking to bounce back after a terrible 2013 campaign. Captain Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell welcome Ray Emery back to Philly as the Flyers try to get back to the playoffs.

3. Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks, Saturday night 10 p.m. EST

We’ll see if there is any ill feelings left over from these two clubs after a pair of contentious exhibition games left Sam Gagner with a broken jaw, Zach Kassian and Dale Weise with suspensions and the Oilers signing Steve McIntyre. The Oilers and Canucks are headed in opposite directions and this is the year that they could swap places in a highly competitive Pacific Division.

2. Detroit Red Wings at Boston Bruins, Saturday night 7 p.m. EST

The defending Eastern Conference champs welcome Detroit to their new conference and division with a Saturday night showdown. The Bruins are led by Tuukka Rask and Zdeno Chara on defense with new face Loui Eriksson joining the Bruins this summer. Detroit is led by Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and new signings Stephen Weiss and Daniel Alfredsson. These two powerhouses are be the favorites to conquer the new Northeast Division and there is sure to be bad blood.

1.Washington Capitals at Chicago Blackhawks, Tuesday night 8 p.m. EST

Sure it is the opening night marque matchup, but this game features some of the NHL’s brightest stars. OF course the Hawks will be hoisting their second Stanley Cup banner in four seasons. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Corey Crawford and company will all remind us that they are all under 30 and capable of “dynasty” status. Then there is the Capitals and their collection of stars. Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Braden Holtby want to jump out to a good start in their new Metropolitan Division.
