NHL 2013-14: Player Profile--Chris Kunitz

Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Chris Kunitz is one of the most underrated forwards in the NHL. The Regina, Saskatchewan native plays on the hottest line in the NHL right now with Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis.

Kunitz was an undrafted player out of Ferris State and a 2003 Hobey Baker finalist whi signed with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. He played in Cincinnati with the AHL club before being called up to Anaheim. A couple of waiver wire swaps with the Atlanta Thrashers saw him switch coasts before finally sticking with the Ducks. Kunitz’ breakout season came in the 2006-2007 season when he had 25 goals and a total of 60 points. After a couple of sub-par seasons in Anaheim, Kunitz arrived via trade with the Ducks and the Penguins that included Eric Tangradi for defenseman Ryan Whitney. His best statistical season came in the 2011-2012 season with the Penguins when he totaled 26 goals and 35 assists to finish with 61 points for the season.

His presence on Pittsburgh has been huge because he’s one of the hardest working players on the ice. Before he was traded from Anaheim, he was named an alternate captain and wears the “A” with the Pens as well. Kunitz has a veteran presence on Crosby’s wing because he’s been in the league longer and plays like a power forward around him. Despite being only six feet tall, Kunitz is a fearless grinder with the scoring touch of a sniper. Every time he scores it’s an energy-booster.

Any player would be successful playing on the wing of Sidney Crosby but Kunitz certainly doesn’t take it for granted. As a member of the most dangerous lines in the world, Kunitz is sure to be added to the Team Canada roster for the Sochi Olympics come February. Last season, Kunitz was named to the NHL First All Star Team, which is particularly impressive after being waived by two teams before getting to Pittsburgh. After a new contract extension this season, he’s for sure going to retire as a Penguin. Not bad for an undrafted free agent.
