NHL 2013-14: Top Rookie Performances Early On

The race for rookie of the year looks like it could be a tight one again in 2013-14, as there is no clear-cut favorite. It may a week into the season, but several rookies are already beginning to make names for themselves. Here are some of the top rookies starting their careers off on the right foot this season.

C Tomas Hertl - San Jose Sharks

Hertl has been a pleasant surprise in San Jose and a big part of the team's 2-0 start. He has already seen some powerplay time despite never playing in the NHL before this season, and he has even tallied a powerplay goal which turned out to be a game-winner.

He currently has two goals, one assist, and a plus-two rating.

C Sean Monahan - Calgary Flames

Monahan was picked sixth overall in this year's NHL Entry Draft and is expected to spearhead the rebuilding of the lowly Calgary Flames. Actually, Calgary has not been "lowly" at all thus far, getting at least a point in each of their three games with a 1-0-2 record.

Monahan has already made his presence known, scoring two goals and adding an assist in his first three NHL games. He currently has a three-game point streak going...not a bad way to start a career.

RW Alex Chiasson - Dallas Stars

After Dallas sold away some of their better offensive players at last year's trade deadline, Chiasson got to experience seven games at the NHL level near the end of the year. Surprisingly, his efforts nearly helped lead the Stars to a playoff berth, as he netted six goals and tallied an assist in those seven games.

This year, he is picking up right where he left off. Chiasson has scored a goal in each of his first two games, and he now has eight goals in nine total NHL games.

C Nathan MacKinnon - Colorado Avalanche

He may not have scored his first NHL goal yet, but first-overall pick Nathan MacKinnon is already playing well in Colorado.

The 18-year-old has played in two NHL games and has tallied three assists and a plus-three rating, helping his Avalanche to a 2-0 start out of the gates. He has also been in the news due to being the victim of a questionable hit by Anaheim's Ben Lovejoy, which prompted Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy to throw a fit on the bench.

MacKinnon has already been a part of Colorado's very early success, and he should not have to wait long to get his first goal.
