NHL 2014: Action Plan For the Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals are in need of a new General Manager and new Head Coach after they fired GM George McPhee and Coach Adam Oates. McPhee was there for 16 seasons while Oates only coached there for two. The Caps are also in dire need of help roster wise. What should Washington do this offseason?

Hire Ray Shero as GM: Ray Shero was recently fired by the Pittsburgh Penguins and now he’s out there looking for jobs. If you’re Washington, you HAVE TO hire Shero. He’s one of the best General Managers in hockey and can certainly turn this team around this coming season. He isn’t afraid to make big trades for big players, so if he is hired the Caps will make a few big moves this summer.

Get Barry Trotz: Barry Trotz could also turn this Capitals’ franchise around. He’s a great coach and it was very surprising that Nashville fired him after this season. A new coach could just be what Alex Ovechkin needs in Washington as he tries and chases his first Stanley Cup.

This could end up being one of the bigger steals of the offseason if the Capitals can pull this off. Trotz is an old school hockey mind that preaches accountability. A strong personality could be just the thing that the apathetic Capitals need.

Get Ovechkin Help: Let’s be honest here. Ovechkin can’t carry this team on his back the whole season even if he’s coring over 50 goals and winning the Rocket Richard Trophy yet again. It just won’t happen. The captain needs some big playmakers out there that can come in and also score some goals for Washington.

There are some great forwards that will be on the market this year including Thomas Vanek, Matt Moulson, Mike Cammalleri, Jarome Iginla are the biggest names out there. The salary cap is projected to be around $71.1 million, which would leave the Capitals and their new administration plenty of room to make a splash.

It’s going to be an interesting offseason for the Capitals and I’m sure all of the Caps fans are just wondering what’s going to happen in the next couple of weeks/months.
