Today, April 3rd is the NHL trade deadline. There have been some preliminary deals that have hit the wire to dump salaries and to strengthen rosters. There have been the head scratchers, like Ryane Clowe to the New York Rangers and the no-brainers like Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins.
It certainly seems like there is more to come this afternoon and evening as the final pieces for the playoffs get shuffled. The buyers and sellers will make a concise declaration to their intentions for the rest of this season. Lame duck contracts will be dealt and there could be more iconic players like Jarome Iginla who put in a change of address to bid for the Stanley Cup.
Here is a look at five deals that could have, should have and still might take place before the deadline passes. Remember folks, I may not be a real NHL general manager, (but I should be) and I don’t play one on television.
5. Jason Pominville, RW, Buffalo to the San Jose Sharks
Buffalo has officially requested a list of teams that Pominville will reject a trade to. Now I have no idea whether or not San Jose is on that list or not, but it makes sense for a high scoring wing on a dead end team to move to a playoff team that needs some scoring.
4. Ray Whitney, RW, Dallas to the New York Rangers
The veteran sniper will be on the move after Dallas made their position as deadline sellers clear yesterday. The Rangers have been the biggest disappointment this season after acquiring Rick Nash last summer. They addressed their missing physical element by acquiring Ryane Clowe on Tuesday and Whitney will help them get some goals on Wednesday.
3. Roberto Luongo, G, Vancouver to Toronto Maple Leafs
This deal has been almost nine months in the making but it’s finally time for Canucks GM Mike Gillis to pull the trigger. IT was reported that Gillis coveted Clowe from the Sharks, but couldn’t strike a deal. He’ll ship Luongo to Toronto for a couple of draft picks or a quality prospect. Rumors about Miikka Kiprusoff to Toronto make no sense given that Kiprusoff will look to secure a contract before he agrees to go anywhere. James Reimer has been good for Toronto this season, but has zero playoff experience.
2. Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning to Los Angeles Kings
The long time Lightning winger will be on the move to the west coast as GM Steve Yzerman officially puts the white flag up on the season. I know Yzerman would love to get goalie Jonathan Bernier in return, but the Kings have already expressed that they won’t be moving him. St. Louis will give the Kings some more offense as they gear up for the defense of their Stanley Cup.
1.Keith Yandle, D, Phoenix Coyotes to Detroit Red Wings
Detroit GM Ken Holland has already said that Detroit would stand pat around the deadline, but has to still be bitter about missing out on Ryan Suter and Zach Parise in last summer’s free agent derby. Adding a top flight power play quarter back like Yandle will bolster the Red Wings’ revolving door of sub-par defensemen. The Coyotes will be relieved to dump Yandle’s salary of $5.2 million and Detroit has a surplus of forwards to deal.
