Weekend number five in the NHL is here and if you need a last minute boost to your fantasy hockey team, we have you covered. The well has not yet run dry on some quality free agents.
There are several reasons for this, the most significant being that there are some huge names that are underperforming. Managers holding on to the likes of Claude Giroux, Nail Yakupov or Alexander Semin or injured stars like Kris Letang, James Neal, Pekka Rinne or Rick Nash may not have roster space to add players. Statistically we all expect these players to be worth their while, but in the mean time grab these five players if you have the roster space.
Martin Hanzal, C, Phoenix Coyotes
At the moment I am writing this, Hanzal and the Phoenix Coyotes are being taken on by the Los Angeles Kings. Ironically, Hanzal has scored two of the first three Coyote goals. Hanzal’s value isn’t just lighting the lamp though. Through the first ten games of the season the Coyote center is among the league leaders in assists and faceoffs won. That may not seem like a season changer, but the 26-year old Czech center is also putting up hits, penalty minutes and shots. When every point counts, Hanzal is the type of player you need. A Sunday home matinee against the lowly Edmonton Oilers could provide a statistical bonanza for Hanzal, and you.
Frans Nielsen, C, New York Islanders
Anytime I hear the name Frans, I immediately wonder if someone named Hans is nearby. Old Saturday Night Live sketch, enjoy here. The Islanders have hardly set the world on fire to start the season, but Nielsen has been a nice sleeper surprise. Through Thursday, Nielsen was tied with John Tavares at the top of the Islanders scoring table. While I expect Tavares to put some distance between himself and Nielsen by the time the season ends, grab the great Danish center while he has a hot hand.
Jiri Hudler, C, Calgary Flames
I know I listed Hudler as one of my players to sell high, but the pint-sized Czech center is still riding a wave of production, so he can be considered a viable add. Through the Flames’ first 12 games Hudler has potted four goals and added eight helpers. It’s a long shot to expect point-per-game numbers over an 82 game season, but Hudler could be a sneaky add for the weekend push.
Ryan Malone, LW, Tampa Bay Lightning
Don’t look now, but the Lightning swept their season series with the defending Stanley Cup champs. A 6-5 overtime win Thursday night gave Tampa six wins in nine games. A major reason for the early season success is the play of veteran winger Malone. In addition to adding a goal and three assists, Malone piles up the penalty minutes, hits and shots. At only 16% ownership in all Yahoo leagues, Malone has a Sunday night home match against the awful Buffalo Sabres to help pad his and your stats.
Jean-Sebastian Giguere, G, Anaheim Ducks
We all keep waiting for the shine to fall off of “Giggy” but maybe coach Patrick Roy is channeling himself in to the 36-year old goaltender. He isn’t the starter in Colorado, but is good for a second or third option if you happen to have Lundqvist, Jonathan Quick or the injured Rinne. Besides, I fully stand by my statement that Semyon Varlamov will pull his groin sooner rather than later.
