With most teams playing in the neighborhood of five to seven games it might be too early to start projecting huge statistical seasons from some unsung players.
Will Thomas Hertl win the Maurice Richard Trophy? Probably not, but the rookie has already left a sizeable stamp on the young season with a four goal performance and a highlight reel goal. If pissing off an NHL coach and creating a discussion among the NHL’s foremost talking heads had any fantasy value, then Hertl is a “buy now” prospect.
The fact is that Henrik Lundqvist will still be a top five goalie by the end of the season, Claude Giroux will eventually catch fire and Sidney Crosby will put a sizeable statistical gap between himself and the rest of the NHL. If you don’t have any of these players on your team, now might be the ideal time to fancy up a reasonable trade (with the exception of Crosby). Here are five players that you should consider high value now that have a high likelihood of depreciation.
5. Thomas Hertl, C, San Jose Sharks
Let’s face it, Hertl can’t possibly keep up this pace can he? The likelihood is that he won’t so you should move him for value while he is the league leader in goals scored. San jose is chock full of talent and could be making some big trades before the Olympic break. Hertl's value could go up for the NHL club, but you should move him while he has peak value on your team.
4. Semyon Varlamov, G, Colorado Avalanche
With an unbelievable start in Colorado there is no team in the NHL that will level out like the Avs. Dare I even suggest that they take a temporary nose-dive with their savior St. Patrick behind the bench? Well, it’s going to happen and there is no way that Varlamov will keep up his play for much longer. Everyone wants a stud in goal and with the erratic play of the usual favorites, Varlamov will fetch a hefty reward on the trading front.
3. Patrick Marleau, C/LW, San Jose Sharks
His name would be Mr. October if Reggie Jackson hadn’t slapped a trademark on it years ago. It’s also not as flattering a nickname considering the games matter significantly less for hockey in October. Marleau is up to his usual fast start along with the undefeated Sharks. While I think that the Sharks are showing that they are a legitimate contender, Marleau will take his annual statistical swan dive around mid-December. Sell now.
2. Ben Bishop, G, Tampa Bay Lightning
I love that Bishop is playing so well as the starter for Tampa. I want so badly for the Lightning to succeed, both for Steve Yzerman and for their star/hostage Steven Stamkos. The Lightning have the best-kept secret in the NHL with Stamkos and will never let him see the light of a legitimate hockey market. While I can’t blame them for holding on to him with all their might, it sucks that he’ll never wear a sweater that really matters in the NHL. Oh, back to Bishop. He’s 6’7, 26 years old and has the look of a guy that wants to keep his job. He will, but only because Tampa has no other options in net.
1. Alexander Ovechkin, LW/RW, Washington Capitals
I know I already wrote a letter of apology to Ovechkin for how he has started the season and how I didn’t believe in him. Maybe I’ll have to write another one, but there is no way he can keep up his current scoring pace. The Capitals suck and have been beating up only on teams that happen to suck worse. This will wear on the Russian winger and I think that he’ll be gassed by Christmas from trying to carry the Caps on his back all year.
