NHL Fantasy Hockey 2014-15: Picking the Top Fantasy Option on Each Western Conference Team

The Western Conference has been the more dominant portion of the NHL over the past five years. The power teams are weighted more heavily in the west, something that seems to be fairly cyclical in nature.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that the best players play out west, because there are certainly more elite-caliber goaltenders in the east. There are still plenty of quality net minders to find in the Central and Pacific Time zones, but chances are there are better fantasy options on their respective teams.

Here are your best bets for fantasy success for the Western Conference teams.

Anaheim Ducks-Ryan Getzlaf, C

The Ducks are chock full of talent for sure, but while Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have highs and lows, captain Getzlaf is a consistent production stud. With machine-like precision, you can count on the top Anaheim center to be near the top of the league in assists at full or extra strength, faceoffs, hits and shots for his position.

Arizona Coyotes-Keith Yandle, D

There isn’t much to choose from in the desert, but I’ll steer away from “dry wells” or similar puns. Yandle is your best bet on the desert dogs from a purely statistical standpoint. He is the top defenseman on defensive-minded Dave Tippett’s squad, and while he is far from the best defender, from a fantasy point of view, he is money.

Calgary Flames-Sean Monahan, C

The young starlet was the furthest thing from a lock to even make the Calgary team last fall, but burst out of the gate and made a huge impression on Bob Hartley and staff. His 22 goals were second on the team behind outgoing Mike Cammalleri, and if the coaches can convince him to shot even more, those numbers will rise. Calgary is certainly not going to be contending for anything but draft picks this season, but Monahan’s star is on the rise.

Chicago Blackhawks-Jonathan Toews, C

Choosing the best fantasy player in Chicago is almost like trying to pick a nice daily driver in Jay Leno’s garage. Let’s stick with what we know with Captain Serious. Toews is consistently superior in almost every aspect of the game. He plays both ends of the ice hard and manages to put up big offensive numbers while being one of the best defensive centers in the NHL.

Colorado Avalanche-Matt Duchene, C

Duchene is finally becoming the player the Avs though they were drafting five years ago. He put up 70 points in 71 games and you can bet those numbers will only get bigger and better as the 23-year old ages. If the young Colorado superstar can stay healthy, he is offensively gifted enough to tease the top five in scoring.

Dallas Stars-Tyler Seguin, C

Speaking of breakout seasons, the Stars big offseason acquisition paid off in spades last year with Seguin lighting up the league with his best effort to date. His 84 points (37 goals and 47 assists) put him in elite company at fourth overall in the scoring race. Seguin will turn 23 in January with a future as bright as any young star in the league.

Edmonton Oilers-Taylor Hall, LW

If Taylor Hall played in almost any big city he would be hyped as the next best thing since Sidney Crosby’s exhaled breath. Almost anyone that knows the NHL will acknowledge that the young Edmonton star is the best left wing in the league and is putting up the stats to prove it. He is no longer under the radar, so grab him quick in your fantasy league.

Los Angeles Kings-Jonathan Quick, G

The Kings are the epitome of what a championship team truly is. They are the sum of many very, very good parts. While Marian Gaborik is my coin-flip option at 1A for the Kings, I’m going with Quick as my fantasy pick for Los Angeles. He may save his best for the playoffs, but Quick has proven that he can be a regular season stat monger as well.

Minnesota Wild-Zach Parise, LW

While we’re on the subject of left wings, Parise is certainly worthy of mention. The easiest selection for Minnesota is the native son, who is looking to bounce back after an injury-plagued 2013-14. A former 45-goal and 94-point scorer, Parise makes everyone around him better and has proven to be a difference maker for the Wild. In a weak left wing crop, Parise is a top three consideration.

Nashville Predators-Shea Weber, D

While we wait to see if Pekka Rinne can bounce back from injury, the Predators top fantasy option has to be burly (and surly) defenseman Weber. He has a cannon from the point that makes him a valuable power play producer, and balances great defensive play with solid offensive contributions at even strength. He finished third among defensemen in scoring with his 23 goals tops among all blue liners.

San Jose Sharks-Logan Couture, C

The guard is now officially changing in San Jose as Joe Thornton was recently stripped of his captaincy. The team is headed in a younger direction, though it chose to keep Jumbo Joe and Patrick Marleau around for at least one more run. Big Thornton is still a good Plan B if you can’t get the 25-year old center, but the man to put your money on for the Sharks these days is Couture.

St. Louis Blues-David Backes, C

The Blues don’t have a star that jumps off the pages at you, which is just how Ken Hitchcock wants things to be. However, the player that can help your fantasy lineup the most is probably Backes. He isn’t a scoring dervish, but racks up stats in the hits, faceoffs and plus/minus. With a team loaded with plenty of great options on the blue line, the Blues’ captain is the man you want in your lineup.

Vancouver Canucks-Henrik Sedin or Daniel Sedin, C or LW

A glance at the Vancouver lineup will tell you that they may get worse before they get better. The Sedin twins are on the down side of impressive careers, but they are still by far the two most productive players on a young and inexperienced roster. Their collective numbers are sliding in the wrong direction, but they still have more value than anyone else you will find in Vancouver.

Winnipeg Jets-Evander Kane, LW

The pouty left wing is still a raw and wild stallion that can breakout at any time. The Jets may not ultimately be the place where this happens but for now the best place to look in Winnipeg for fantasy production is the 22-year old Kane. There were obviously better numbers on the Jets from Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little, but Kane has had a full summer to recover from a season that he was banged up and has the potential to put up monster numbers.
