NHL Free Agency 2014: Top Ten Free Agents to Watch This Summer

It’s still a little early to think about the NHL off-season with the incredible NHL playoffs still going on. However, there are 24 teams that are already looking forward to next year by reloading their roster for a Stanley Cup run.

The class of 2014 seems a little thin at first glance, but here are the top ten free agents that will more than likely be overpaid after July 1st.

Ryan Miller, G-The iconic one-time face of the Buffalo Sabres was moved to St. Louis to help bring Stanley Cup glory to the Gateway City. A first round loss is especially tough considering that Miller looked shot against the Chicago Blackhawks. At 33, his best days are clearly in the rear view mirror, but there will be a team that gives him an obscene amount of money almost as a lifetime achievement award.

Marian Gaborik, RW-The 32-year old sniper is auditioning his services as a mercenary for the Los Angeles Kings in an impressive playoff run this spring. For a player with so much talent, Gaborik never seems to “stick” anywhere. His quick shot and nose for the goal will be coveted by an overpaying suitor that almost seems predestined to trade him to a contender next March.

Paul Stastny, C-Stastny will be hard-pressed to convince anyone to pay him anything near the $6.6 million per deal that just expired in Colorado. The 28-year old center had a solid bounce back year offensively but certainly doesn’t fall into an “elite” category to warrant the big bucks he had been “earning”.

Thomas Vanek, LW-In the 2007-08 season the Buffalo Sabres paid Thomas Vanek $10 million. He’ll command nowhere near that much this summer, but the Austrian talisman could grab something near the $6 million range that the Sabres, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens combined to pay him this year.

Mike Cammaleri, LW-It was an enormous surprise that the Calgary Flames left their star winger to rot in playoff exile rather than move him to a contender last March. With his time in Alberta coming to an end, the veteran goal scorer will more than likely be moving to a club that has a better shot at the postseason. The two-time 30 goal scorer still has some tread left on his tires and can be an asset in the right spot.

Ales Hemsky, RW-The slippery Czech is known for his silky hands and highlight reel goals. He seemed to flourish once he escaped from the burning dumpster of the Edmonton Oilers. He would have a hard time convincing me that he was worth anything close to the $5 million per year contract that is expiring, but there will be a team sure to fill Hemsky’s pockets given the thin market.

Ryan Callahan, RW-The blockbuster trade that moved Callahan to Tampa Bay was conditional on whether or not he resigns with the Lightning. He was asking for a long-term deal in New York at around $6.5 million so we’ll see exactly how much Steve Yzerman and Tampa value the rugged winger.

Jaroslav Halak, G-With his rights traded to the New York Islanders, Halak is currently living out of a suitcase waiting for his next stop. He would certainly be an upgrade if the Isles can resign him, but Halak might be looking for greener pastures with a more proven opportunity. As arguably the best goaltender on the free market, Halak will have the opportunity to write his ticket for his next contract.

Matt Niskanen, D-Ironically, Niskanen was the odd man out in the Pittsburgh defensive rotation earlier this year. He was the player deemed expendable and most likely to be traded until a rash of injuries thrust him into the top defensive pairing. Niskanen responded by having the best season of his career at the best possible time. With the Pens strapped by some enormous contracts they probably won’t be able to compete with teams looking for the ever-elusive right-handed defenseman. A bargain at $2.3 million this year, the Finnish rear guard will get a handsome pay raise this summer.

Matt Moulson, RW-Never the flashiest, Matt Moulson always seems to be in the right place at the right time. After a tumultuous season that had three different stops, the three-time 30-goal scorer had a down year statistically. If Moulson lands in the right spot, at the right price, he could be a steal for a team that needs someone to do the dirty work in front of the net.
