Unfortunately, some athletes will not get the recognition and publicity they deserve for their actions based on their names and marketability. Sports are a business, and certain players will always have large amounts of coverage no matter how well they are performing.
However, there are always players that seem to play at or above the levels of some of the game's biggest stars and still do not get the credit and coverage that they deserve.
Alexander Steen of the St. Louis Blues is one of those players.
Steen has spent his career as a solid forward in Toronto and St. Louis. While he has been a fairly productive player who is normally borderline top-six material, he is having the time of his life so far this season.
Steen has already scored 20 goals in 2013-14. His career high is 24. In fact, he has more than doubled his entire output of goals from last season in fourteen less games.
His goal total ranks second in the NHL and his points total of 31 is third.
Surprised? Feel like you haven't been paying enough attention to hockey this year? Don't feel bad. Steen has flown under the radar all year and has emerged as one of the NHL's biggest surprises of 2013-14. Definitely a dream if you have him on your fantasy hockey team.
Steen's offensive output is a major reason why his St. Louis Blues are one of the top teams in the NHL. Much of the Blues' success has come from focusing on preventing goals, but St. Louis has definitely had issues scoring them in recent years.
When a player like Steen comes along and breaks out for 20 goals in the first two months of the season, it goes without saying that it can provide a huge boost to a team.
For fantasy purposes, however, Steen may be able to help you out in a different way.
Now, it is very possible that Steen could continue to have a terrific year. Based on his track record, however, this torrid pace should be expected to slow down. Right now, he is at or near maximum value, and if you are lucky enough to have him for your fantasy team, try to deal him for a player with more proven success.
It may be hard to part with numbers like his, but when your trade partner sees what he has been doing, you could get a major bargain in return.
Nevertheless, keep an eye on Alexander Steen. He has been incredible to watch this year and is a definite Hart Trophy favorite two months into the season.
