Now that the Chicago Blackhawks have won their third Stanley Cup in six years (congrats to them), we now shift our focus to the offseason and it's sure to be a busy one in the coming weeks. The draft is just a little less then two weeks away and we already have some trade rumors as there are sure to be some big trades during or before the draft. Let's see what some of the biggest rumors out there are.
Phil Kessel: It seems that Phil Kessel could be done in Toronto. There's been a lot of chatter in recent weeks about Phil Kessel and how the Leafs may trade him at or before the NHL Draft. Kessel has a NTC but has a list of eight teams who he will accept a trade to. Most of the teams on his list are very much up against the cap like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, or Chicago Blackhawks, The Leafs will most likely try to get him to expand his list of teams so that they can make a trade easier. Toronto is going to ask for a lot back in return but I expect Kessel to be out of Toronto at the draft.
Cam Talbot: The New York Rangers back up goaltender to Henrik Lundqvist seems to be in high demand after a spectacular season where he filled in for Lundqvist after he went down with the neck injury. He guided them into the playoffs very easily actually. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Edmonton, Calgary, and San Jose are very interested in his services and have had talks with New York about trying to get him. He also says the Rangers are going to "hit a homerun on a rate of return for Talbot." I find it so interesting that a backup goaltender can get so much in return. This is a deal I also expect to happen soon since the Rangers are very hard pressed against the cap.
Patrick Sharp: Fresh off winning another Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks, a trade may be the last thing on his mind right now. The fact of the matter is, is that the Blackhawks are going to have to trade somebody since they need to re-sign Brandon Saad. They will be hard against the cap and Sharp is the perfect example of a player they have to move. He makes over four million a year and he'd net them a lot in return despite being 33 years old. We haven't seen much talk about Sharp yet because of the recent Cup win but don't be surprised if it starts to ramp up in the next week.
Brandon Sutter: The Pittsburgh Penguins need a top six winger for this season (two actually) but they don't have a lot of trade chips to work with. The one player that may get the talks going is 3rd line center Brandon Sutter who had the best season of his career with the Penguins this season in terms of scoring goals with 21. There's no better time to move Sutter then now since his value is sky high and I'm sure that Jim Rutherford will throw his name out there in trade talks.
Rick Nash: Rick Nash has been out there in trade talks recently, which is something I did not expect. It looks like the Rangers are trying to move some salary so that they have enough room to sign both Carl Haeglin and Derek Stepan. Nash is a very good goal scorer and had the best season of his career this past season where he was a 40-goal scorer so his value is sky high right now. There's no doubt Nash can land some very good roster players back for New York but this will be an interesting story to look at in the coming days leading up to the draft.
