The shortened season makes this year’s trade deadline even more interesting than in normal years. Since most teams have not separated themselves from the rest of the pack (especially in the Western Conference), it is unclear, for the most part, which teams will be buyers and which teams will be sellers.
We’ve already seen a good amount of interesting and unexpected deals, as Jarome Iginla was shockingly traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins rather than the Boston Bruins and Jay Bouwmeester was added to the St. Louis Blues’ blueline.
However, there will undoubtedly be much more movement within the next couple of days with the deadline occurring on Wednesday. Here are the top-five trade rumors currently surrounding the league.
Ryane Clowe - San Jose Sharks
Clowe is usually a decent offensive forward with a physical touch, but he has yet to score a single goal. This especially hurts the Sharks, as they are near the bottom of the NHL in terms of goals scored but are still in the thick of the tight Western Conference playoff race. There is no question that Clowe can still contribute, and maybe a change of scenery could do the trick. Don’t be surprised if San Jose swaps him for a consistent goal scorer.
Ryan Miller - Buffalo Sabres
The chances of Miller getting traded are not very high, but by trading Jordan Leopold and Robyn Regehr, the Sabres look to be true sellers at this year’s deadline. Several teams trying desperately to make the playoffs need goaltending, and Miller would be a prime add for any team in need of a keeper. Despite the fact that they will join Buffalo’s division in 2013-14, Tampa Bay could be a definite candidate to obtain one of the league’s better starting goalies.
Miikka Kiprusoff - Calgary Flames
Despite reportedly saying he would not report to a new team if he is traded, it is probably safe to say that basically no Flame is guaranteed to stay in Calgary. Kiprusoff is no exception, as he is a veteran goalie on a team that is going nowhere soon and could help out a legitimate contender.
Marian Gaborik - New York Rangers
Gaborik is one of the many big names on an underachieving Rangers team. While he likely will not be traded, GM Glen Sather could try a major shakeup by swapping Gaborik for some more offensive depth. He has been an underachieving player on an underachieving team, which is currently last in scoring in the entire Eastern Conference.
Jaromir Jagr - Dallas Stars
With Dallas already trading away Michael Ryder and Brenden Morrow, Jaromir Jagr could definitely be next on the list. The Stars are fighting for a playoff spot, but the time is approaching fast to decide whether or not they want to extend Jagr for another year or two, or trade him for some future assets. It Jagr gets moved, expect Philadelphia, Montreal, or Boston to be his destination. Boston would appear to be the frontrunner after barely missing out on the Iginla sweepstakes.
