Opposites Attract: Alex Ovechkin vs. Daniel Sedin

Alexander Ovechkin and Daniel Sedin are two of the top left wings in the NHL. They are both consistently top scorers, and always top selections in fantasy drafts. If a fantasy owner was given the choice between the two, it would come down to what they are looking for in a player.

Anyone who has watched the NHL over the past few years knows exactly how Ovechkin plays. Ovechkin plays all out, every shift with reckless abandon. Daniel Sedin is almost the complete opposite of Ovechkin. Sedin plays a quite controlled game, and tries to create scoring chances through smooth skating and precise passing.

If you want to go with the safe choice for your fantasy team, Daniel Sedin is the right player for you. There is not a lot of risk with Sedin, and because of the low amount of risk the upside isn’t as great. Sedin is going to give fantasy owners a solid season with around 80 points. There aren’t a lot of surprises with Daniel Sedin, but it isn’t likely that he will have a big breakout season.

Alex Ovechkin is a player that brings more risk to a fantasy team, but with the added risk comes a huge reward. Ovechkin is a wrecking ball of a hockey player. He skates around the ice like a bull in a china shop. While most forwards like Sedin will give you plenty of points, Ovechkin gives fantasy owners a ton of hits. The hits are a great bonus, but Ovechkin also takes a huge number of shots.

The risk with Ovechkin is that he might have a down year when it comes to his offensive production. The 2011-12 season was considered by many people to be a down year for Ovechkin. While last season might have been down by Ovechkin’s standards, he still finished with 38 goals which was the fifth most in the league.

For fantasy owners who want to get a sure thing Sedin is the way to go, but with fantasy hockey there is no need to be safe. Ovechkin is a bigger risk, but he gives owners so much more than just points. The goals, assists, hits, and shots that Ovechkin produces make him the clear choice for any fantasy owner.
