2001 Hobey Baker Award Winner. 2009-2010 Vezina Trophy Winner. Olympic Medalist. There is no doubt that Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller touts an impressive resume. While Miller and the Sabres were considered to be contenders for the championship last year, sub-par goaltending, soft physical play, and an offense that performed below expectations left Buffalo out of the playoffs. Will Miller’s efforts in the crease this season make him a worthy fantasy pickup as he and the retooled Sabres try to add the Stanley Cup to his long list of accomplishments?
Miller’s 2011-2012 season started in typical fashion as he posted a fantastic .930 save percentage in October and a solid GAA of 2.14. In November, the struggles began. A controversial collision with the Boston Bruins’ Milan Lucic left Miller injured and sidelined for the remainder of the month.
When Miller returned he was unable to find his form, turning in a .893 save percentage and a 3.24 GAA in December. Miller fought to regain his domination in the net throughout January. As Buffalo chased the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference Miller performed spectacularly, stringing together a five game winning streak while putting up a 2.17 GAA with a .930 save percentage in March.
Looking forward to the 2012-2013 season, Miller should continue the strong play that was seen at the end of last season. The addition of Steve Ott and Adam Pardy to the Sabres means a tougher, grittier squad is playing in front of him. This should give Miller the confidence to turn in strong efforts game after game.
Although Miller is not quite considered a top 10 goalie in many leagues, he will provide strong numbers for any team. He should still be available in the second or third round of most fantasy drafts. Snap him up after the first round as a solid number two goalie if you draft an ultra-premium goaltender first. If you like to draft the elite skaters first, pick him up as a number one netminder capable of providing solid numbers.
