San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs Swap Goalies

For the second time this trade season, the Sharks and Maple Leafs have struck a deal. The teams will swap goalies this time around, as the Sharks acquire James Reimer and Jeremy Morin for Alex Stalock, Ben Smith, and a conditional fourth round pick in 2018 (which could be a third rounder if the Sharks make the Stanley Cup finals).

The big move here is the acquisition of a solid "1B" type goalie in Reimer. The Sharks have certainly been happy with Martin Jones's performance thus far, but he has shown inconsistency at times due to this being his first year as a starter. Jones figures to stay the "1A" goalie, but should he go through a few rough starts, San Jose can fall back on Reimer to take some pressure off of the youngster. Reimer has been solid on a bad Toronto team this year, posting a save percentage of .918 in 32 games. He actually led the league in save percentage for a bit during the late fall.

Jeremy Morin is a prospect that has bounced around a little bit, as San Jose will represent the fifth organization he's been a part of. He has played in 82 games over five seasons, accumulating just 10 goals. He's nothing more than a depth player that will likely remain in the minors.

The Leafs receive a replacement backup in Alex Stalock, though Stalock has had a horrible year, posting a save percentage of just .884. He should help the Leafs succeed... in obtaining the top overall draft selection this June. Stalock's career just hasn't materialized as it was supposed to, and he's hardly a backup caliber goalie at 28 years old. Ben Smith is a bottom six grinder, and though he's not completely worthless, he's also not much to write home about.

Fantasy Fallout

James Reimer will go from more playing time to less, but he will also go from losing to winning more often than not. Should Martin Jones struggle and Reimer become the "1A" goalie, he would be a must-add in fantasy leagues. He is certainly worth using in the right matchups in NHL DFS as well. The move from Toronto also makes Jonathan Bernier the unquestioned starter in Toronto, though he hasn't had a great season and the Leafs figure to lose quite a few games down the stretch.

Martin Jones will take a bit of a hit here, as he goes from the main man in the crease to a goalie with a bit less slack. For all the grief the Sharks have gotten with their recent failures to meet expectations, it's a move they had to make. Jones has posted a .916 save percentage and has kept the Sharks in the playoff hunt, but he is also a first year starter that has struggled for stretches of gams. He will probably receive fewer starts going forward, which could actually benefit him as he stays a bit more fresh.

Way Too Early Trade Judgment

The Sharks, it would seem, as they shore up the most important position on the ice down the stretch run of a likely playoff season. Reimer is an unrestricted free agent and he certainly was a fan of playing in Toronto, so he could conceivably go back there this summer. San Jose didn't have to give up much, however, as the draft pick in a few years is late enough that it's no lock to land an NHL caliber player.

Then again, the move does give the Leafs an inferior player in net, which will absolutely help them lose games and get a better draft pick. So, it looks like this was actually a mutually beneficial trade for both sides to reach their (very opposite) goals.
