Game five of the Stanley Cup finals in L.A. will prove to be more intriguing than many of you may think. The majority of hockey fans out there are still counting out a New York Rangers team to succumb to the initial of blow of finding themselves down three games to none to the Los Angeles Kings. Now that the Kings have a win under their belt, the underdogs may have just experienced exactly what they have been looking for: Ownership of a hot goaltender.
Henrik Lundqvist absolutely stole the show on Broadway in game four of the cup finals, stopping 40 of the 41 shots he faced. Lundqvist single handedly kept his Rangers teammates in the game all night, while giving them new life as they try to do the improbable and stretch this championship series to seven games.
A hot goaltender is the last thing that the Kings want to have to deal with heading into game five of the finals at home. The Kings have to continue to throw the puck at the net from whichever angle they can possibly come up with. The Kings have outshot the Rangers in three out of the four games thus far with a total of 143 shots. If they want to ensure another win this series, they will have to win it now while at home. Any sort of roll that Lundqvist manages to go on could spell trouble for the Kings.
Lundqvist is a game changer, and may very well be on his way to becoming that of a series changing type. Arguably, the Rangers have no business heading back to L.A. for a game five in this series. They have been badly outplayed by the Kings in every facet of the game, with the exception of goaltending. The rest of the series will be up to the talents held by Lundqvist. The Rangers will only go as far as their star goaltender will take them. If he manages to squeak by game five with a tight victory, its anyone’s series at that point. Don’t count out Lundqvist and the Rangers just yet.
