Stanley Cup Playoffs 2014: Daily Picks for Friday May 9, 2014

There are a couple big games tonight and we also have the potential to see our first handshake of the second round when the New York Rangers travel to Pittsburgh to save their season. Chicago also has the chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their series against the Minnesota Wild. Who wins tomorrow? Let’s take a look.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers

Tomorrow is do or die for the Rangers and their star players who have been sleepwalking through the last three games. They’re down 3-1 in this series and now have to beat Pittsburgh three times in a row to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. Rick Nash, Derek Stepan, and Martin St. Louis will have to do something tomorrow if they even have a chance at extending this series. Henrik Lundqvist will need to play the game of his life to stave off the bloodthirsty Pens.

Pittsburgh has blood in the water and are licking their chops at the chance to finish the Rangers off. In the end, Pittsburgh is just a better team and are playing better hockey at the moment. Sidney Crosby has found his groove. Evgeni Malkin has looked unstoppable at times, and Kris Letang is playing like a Norris Trophy candidate. The Penguins have been making things easier for Marc-Andre Fleury with solid defensive play, then again the listless Rangers are doing their part as well. Pittsburgh moves on to its second straight Eastern Conference Final and awaits Boston or Montreal. Penguins 3 Rangers 1.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Minnesota Wild

Minnesota has to win this game if they are to upset the Blackhawks. The Wild has been unbelievable at home this postseason so far at 4-0 and they will try to make it 5-0 tomorrow night and tie up the series.  Ilya Bryzgalov has been pretty good for Minnesota so far and the resurrection of Dany Heatley has given the Wild some life. Zach Parise, Jason Pominville and Matt Moulson will need to get more shots on Corey Crawford to make the Chicago goaltender work.

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are the engine that makes the Hawks go. Chicago was held to only 19 shots in Game 3 and was out hit 22-8. Expect to see a much more intense Chicago club in Game 4 but the Wild will be ready. This game as Minnesota written all over yet and they’ll win tomorrow and tie up the series against Chicago. Minnesota 4 Chicago 2.
