Top Fantasy Options for the 2014-2015 New Jersey Devils

Lately, the New Jersey Devils have not been a team fantasy owners go to and for good reason. Since the departures of Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise, the team doesn't have anybody capable of producing near a point-per-game basis. That beind said, there are a solid number of players to keep an eye on that would be terrific steals in a large league. First, let's take a look at some of the current forwards that will catch a manager's eye. Then a look at defensemen, goaltenders, and dark horses.

Forwards

Jaromir Jagr

The ageless wonder put to rest any doubts about his level of play last season when he led the Devils in virtually every statistical offensive category as he put up 67 points, his highest total since returning to the NHL after a three-year hiatus in the KHL. He also tallied 24 goals, which was one behind Adam Henrique for the team lead. Jagr performed extremely well given his supporting cast. In his first season with New Jersey he was efficient in many fantasy categories and there appears to be no reason to think his production will slow down next season.

Patrik Elias

The 38-year-old Czech Republic native is one of the most underrated fantasy players in the league and has been his entire career. With the exception of a few seasons crippled by injuries, Elias regularly hovers around the 50-70 point range and he has eclipsed the 70 point mark five times in his career. He plays in all situations for New Jersey so he will pick up points on the powerplay, shorthanded, and at even strength, making him a potentially huge steal if you are able to pick him up. Like Jagr, expect Elias' success next season to hinge on any moves Lou Lamoriello may make to bring in a big-time offensive weapon.

Defensemen

Marek Zidlicky

If powerplay points are something you are looking for from a defenseman, then acquiring Zidlicky would be a decent move. In the 2013-2014 season, he registered 12 goals, eight of which were on the powerplay, and 42 points, which was his highest total since 2010. The powerplay for New Jersey improved immensely last season finishing ninth in the league at 19.5 percent. If the powerplay continues to improve, look for Zidlicky to have better numbers next season. Having Zidlicky does come at a cost. He is a consistent minus player and is often a liability defensively.

Goaltenders

Cory Schneider

The former first-round pick had a very tough first season with New Jersey in the wins department, but that was about it. He had the lowest goals against average of any goaltender that started over 40 games, and he had a very good saver percentage at .921. Yet, he only won 16 of his 45 starts. As of right now, Schneider is only under contract with the Devils until the end of this coming season, which may give him extra incentive to perform well in a contract season. Should he sign an extension with New Jersey, look for him to get at least 55 starts if he stays healthy and potentially 65 or more if Martin Brodeur doesn't come back. If the Devils find their offense, expect Schneider to be a valuable goaltender next season.

Dark Horses

Michael Ryder

Despite finding the back of the net just twice in the last 36 games of the season, Ryder can be a valuable player if you catch him on a hot streak. He had multiple stretches where almost everything he shot went in. One period saw him score seven goals in 11 games and another where he scored four goals in five games. There lies the problem for fantasy owners. If you do not get him on a hot streak, he is of little value.

Eric Gelinas

The rookie had a solid season on the offensive side of the puck. Defensively is where he got into coach Peter DeBoer's doghouse. The Ontario native carries a booming shot that makes him a lethal weapon on the Devils' powerplay. 17 of his 22 points came via the man advantage. Those 17 points tied him for second-most powerplay points among rookies. Moving ahead into next season, expect Gelinas' game to improve and if he gets out of DeBoer's doghouse, expect him to see more ice time which will benefit fantasy owners on offense. However, just like Zidlicky, he isn't very solid in the defensive zone yet and is prone to carry along a minus rating.

If the Devils do not go out and aquire a high caliber player, then expect much of the same from these players next season. Each player will be a gamble, but a some can have a very high reward for fantasy owners.
