The first few days of the NHL free agency calendar marked what was an absolute whirlwind of signings throughout the league. Coveted players such as Dan Boyle, Brad Richards and Thomas Vanek were acquired almost immediately. Although there is a lack of ‘huge’ names left on the free agent list, there are still a number of talented and proven individuals that are still looking for a new home for the 2014-15 season. Here’s a look at the top remaining free agents around the NHL and where they may hang their helmets come September.
Daniel Alfredsson basically told the Detroit Red Wings that he will either play in the Motor City this upcoming season or choose to retire from the game altogether. Although Alfredsson is of the ripe old age of 41, he still feels as if he has something to prove at the professional level given the fact that he has yet to win a Stanley Cup.
Expect Alfredsson to decide to play at least one more season as a member of the Red Wings. Given the fact that the organization is no stranger to signing veteran players, they seem to somewhat be obsessed with employing those veterans of Swedish descent. Alfredsson will be a Red Wing in 2014-15.
While Dany Heatley may not be the most popular guy in the city of Toronto due to his time as a member of the Ottawa Senators earlier in his career, the left-winger could very well find himself wearing blue and white come this fall. Heatley is fresh off of a six-year deal worth $45MM, a contract that is no longer in the cards for the once star forward.
After scoring six points in 11 playoff games in 2013-14, Heatley’s stock may have risen a little bit more after the Minnesota Wild were eliminated. Toronto is starving for some depth up front anywhere from their second to third line. Heatley would serve as a better than average addition, deep into the Maple Leafs lineup.
The Arizona Coyotes were clearly uncomfortable with the fact that Mike Ribeiro was suffering from what the team called “behavioral issues”. Now that the centerman’s contract was bought out by the Coyotes, Ribeiro and his issues will be hired on to play hockey for another team.
There are an abundance of teams that need a legitimate second-line center. Ribeiro has the ability to put the puck in the net while being arguably the biggest pest on the ice at any given time. Although the Florida Panthers are stick very much an up and coming team, there’s no reason for them to think that they can’t yet contend for a playoff spot. Signing Ribeiro would give them some depth up the middle of the ice while sparking an offense that is already chock-full of young talent that is soon to come out of it’s shell.
Ribeiro’s overall experience would help the Panthers get out of the gate quicker than they have in the past, something that will be very important if they want to play deep into the 2014-15 season.
