Moore gives Devils OT win over Senators
OTTAWA -- Defenseman John Moore scored at 1:20 of overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 5-4 a come-from-behind victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night at Canadian Tire Centre.
The Devils (6-1-0) earned their third win in a row. The Senators (3-1-3) remain winless in four home games.
The first pick in this summer's draft, Nico Hischier, scored the first two goals of his NHL career by the 4:21 mark of the opening period, and Kyle Palmierei and Marcus Johansson also scored for the Devils. Taylor Hall added four assists.
Kyle Turris, Derick Brassard, Alex Burrows and Tom Pyatt scored for the Senators, while Erik Karlsson added three assists.
Craig Anderson made 41 stops in the Ottawa net. New Jersey's Cory Schneider made 20 saves on 24 shots through two periods before exiting the game with a lower-body injury. He was replaced by Kevin Kinkaid, who stopped all nine shots he faced.
Trailing 4-2 after two periods, New Jersey bounced back in the third. Palmieri took a pass from Hall and broke in to fire a shot behind Anderson at 4:03. Johansson took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to tie the game at 15:05.
Hischier opened the scoring just 2:30 into the first period. From the edge of the crease, he took a Drew Stafford pass from behind the net and fired it over Anderson.
The Senators evened the count 27 seconds later, and six seconds into their first power play. Turris positioned himself at the top of the left-wing face-off circle and relayed a Karlsson pass through Schneider's legs.
Hischier put the Devils back in front, and rounded out the opening period scoring, with another attempt from the edge of the crease at the 4:21 mark.
The Senators took over in the second, scoring the period's only three goals while being outshot 14-10.
Brassard knotted the score with his fourth of the season by driving to the net and pushing the puck past Schneider 5:27 into the middle frame.
Burrows finished off a quick three-way passing play on the power play with his first at the 7:15 mark to put the Senators ahead by one.
Pyatt scored his first, at 15:49, when he whipped around and beat Schneider from the left of the goalie.
NOTES: The goal scored by Senators F Alex Burrows in the second period was the 200th of his career. ... With G Cory Schneider getting the start in goal for the Devils, G Kevin Kinkaid was tabbed to work between the pipes Friday against San Jose. Schneider's second period lower-body injury means the Devils likely will have to call up a back-up for Kinkaid. ... The Devils' scratches were F Jimmy Hayes, D Ben Lovejoy and D Mirco Mueller ... As expected, Senators D Mark Borowiecki was scratched with an upper-body ailment after he engaged in fights in three consecutive games.
