Sharks pick up road win over skidding Rangers
NEW YORK -- Martin Jones stopped 33 shots as the San Jose Sharks defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
Logan Couture scored his fourth goal in two games, and defenseman Tim Heed scored his first NHL goal for the Sharks. Joonas Donskoi and Melker Karlsson added goals for San Jose.
The Sharks (4-4-0) have won two of three on their five-game road trip that resumes Thursday in Boston.
Henrik Lundqvist made 20 saves for the Rangers (2-6-2), who have lost six of seven. Mika Zibanejad scored New York's lone goal in the third period after San Jose built a 4-0 lead.
The Rangers went 0-for-6 on the power play.
Couture opened the scoring 1:56 into the first period during a delayed penalty call against the Rangers. He ripped a shot from around the faceoff circles that found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Heed made it 2-0 at 12:45 of the first period. The 26-year-old carried the puck along the right side and sent a shot toward Lundqvist from a bad angle, and the puck squeezed through the goaltender to extend the lead.
Donskoi sent the Sharks to the second intermission with a 3-0 lead by wristing a shot past Lundqvist's glove side on a breakaway with 37.1 seconds remaining. Lundqvist appeared to injure his left leg as Donskoi clipped him while skating through the crease, but the goalie remained in the game.
Karlsson pushed the lead to 4-0 at 2:51 of the third period after Lundqvist lost the puck behind his net to Couture, who fed Karlsson in front of the goal.
Zibanejad ended Jones' shutout bid less than two minutes later when his quick shot deflected off a Sharks defender and past Jones to make it 4-1.
