Jets return favor with shutout of Blues
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The St. Louis Blues discovered that revenge is a dish best served ice-cold as the Winnipeg Jets handed them a 4-0 loss, reversing the result in Missouri less than 24 hours earlier -- plus a couple of extra goals.
Adam Lowry scored the winner for the Jets (19-10-5), Patrik Laine, Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey netted insurance markers and Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 24 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season.
Jake Allen stopped 42 shots for the Blues (22-11-2), who shut out the Jets 2-0 on Saturday night despite being outshot 48-30.
Left winger Brandon Tanev took out two Blues defenders behind their net early in the second period. Right winger Andrew Copp picked up a loose puck to the left of Allen and found Lowry, who scored from the top of the crease for his fifth goal of the season at 4:32.
After defenseman Alex Pietrangelo took a minor penalty for cross-checking Jets center Bryan Little on the back of the head at 13:48, the Jets power play then went to work.
As the first unit started to change after striking out during the first minute, Laine started the break-in and stayed on the ice. Center Mathieu Perreault dug the puck out from behind the net and found the young Finn at the faceoff dot to Allen's right. He ripped a wrist shot to the blocker side that gave the Jets a 2-0 lead at 15:13. It was his 16th of the season, tops on the Jets, and 10th with the man advantage.
The Jets salted the game away in the third period when defenseman Morrissey hit Scheifele with a pass in the slot and the center deflected it home for his 15th of the season at 11:54 for a 3-0 lead.
Morrissey showed a little offensive flair just a few minutes later, sneaking into the slot undetected and ripping a feed from captain Blake Wheeler over Allen's outstretched glove for his fifth of the season at 14:45.
